should I go with a Premier provider only?

should I go with a Premier provider only?

#1 Post by tom tom »

I'm considering Invisalign. The ortho I'm considering using is ABO certified (a high distinction) but she is not a Premier provider, which means she is highly qualified as an ortho but perhaps not as experienced with Invis as some others. Do you think it's more important to use a Premier provider even if she/he is not ABO certified? I have not seen an ABO ortho nearby who is also a Premier+ provider, so I will have to favor one criteria over the other

How complex a case do you consider you've got? That could be a deciding factor. If you find a good ortho and they are struggling with Invisalign, at least they will be able to switch you to fixed braces if needed.
Initial set: 31 upper / 17 lower
1st refinement: 14 upper / 10 lower
2nd refinement: 10 upper / 5 lower

The ABO ortho said my case is fairly routine, not difficult at all. She said it'd take about 20 trays, followed by possibly a few months of braces to fine-tune the results. However I really don't want to wear braces. That's the point of Invisalign! I would be willing to wear them for no more than 2 months, so if she struggles w/ Invisalign after 10 trays, this will be a $6000 disaster because I'm not willing to switch to braces for a year.

I can't give you a good answer. Maybe discuss your concerns about her inexperience using Invisalign. Maybe she still has done a good deal of cases and maybe she can consult with more experienced doctors if she needs to. Tell her your concerned with what happens if the treatment doesn't work as planned and the cost and see what she says.

Perhaps this tells you what your most important criteria is? If you are dead set against fixed braces, then it seems sensible to find the most experienced invisalign provider. IMHO that will reduce the possibility of ending up in fixed braces.

Please remember though that Invisalign cannot do everything that fixed braces can. You've got to weigh the comfort and "invisability" against the possibility of a poorer outcome.
