It will depend on your ortho's agreement with Invisalign. You'll need to ask this question directly if it's not in your contract.
In my case, my ortho substituted Invisalign into my treatment plan instead of regular braces due to a pre-existing condition, and I was told I would require regular braces if he couldn't get results with Invisalign. I didn't pay anything extra. Since my contract is based on a regular treatment plan, I'm not really sure any refinement is included.

Number of refinements depends on the product.
There are 3 types of Invisalign products:
1. Regular
2. Teen
3. Express
The first two allow for 1 mid course correction (taking a new impression in the middle of treatment because the teeth are not tracking), and up to 3 refinements. These are built into the lab cost of the regular and Teen fees. Therefore, there should not be an additional cost to you. However, if treatment takes much longer than expected due to these refinements, make sure this additional time is included in your contract.
With Express, you are allowed 1 refinement, and 1 detailing set (3 trays with no ClinCheck). These are not included in the lab fee paid by your orthodontist or dentist. Therefore, you should make sure you find out prior to treatment if these costs are included.

Wow, finally a self-identified ortho to answer all the questions we can't possibly think to ask. Great, informative answers, keep checking in on us, we have experiences and solutions but not the authority of a licensed practitioner. I've purposely gone back and read all of your posts, terrific. Invisalign is a great system but one size does not fill all and hand-holding is a must with some as you and all others can see. Mine is a simple case but I still like checking in with the crowd from time to time nonetheless.
Keep up the good work Doc.
