aligner not fitting around an attachment

#1 Post by TinySmiley »

Hi everyone,
I had a question that I was hoping I could get some advice. I just put on aligner 20/27 and it doesn't seem to be fitting around my attachment on one of my teeth (a tooth beside one of my front teeth). So my aligner is not sitting snug/sort of sticking out against my gumline (around that tooth).
I had the same trouble with aligner 19, but I just kept biting down on it and it seemed to fit well by the end of the two weeks. I'm just wondering, if this is something I should go see my ortho about on Monday (would he recommend me to do something different? would he be able to fix it so it will fit?) or if I should just wear the aligners and see him in 2 weeks at my next appointment.
Thanks. :)

I had a similar problem - what happens is tooth movement doesn't follow the projected changes so the attachment doesn't keep up with aligner changes. When this happened to me, my ortho made a first pass at the problem by filing off my attachment and using the previous tray as a template to replace it. In my case, difficulties continued with this and other issues, and I ended up with a mid course correction. You may find this is not necessary in your case.

My suggestion is to call your orthodontist's office now so they will know what is going on. This way, they can schedule extra time at your next appointment to handle the problem. Also, they may want to see you sooner.

Be sure to take in your last couple of tray sets so they can decide which will be best to use for replacement attachments.

Good luck!!

thanks Wireless. :)
I called my ortho's office and she said that it was OK, and that I should mention it at my next appointment. I'm doubtful about it being "OK" :? but I have been biting down a lot hoping that it helps in some way.

An ill-fitting aligner due to an attachment may actually cause undesired movements. The aligner doesn't know whether it is contacting the attachment or the tooth. It is actually touching the attachment prematurely, so in a case of a buccal attachment, it may actually push the tooth lingually.

Still, it is something that can be addressed at your next visit. I wouldn't worry too much about it :).

I just searched the internet because I am having the same type of problem and really hope a dentist can advise. I am on tray 15 of 21, with no problems until yesterday when I was changing from 14 to 15. My aligner won't fit on to all of my attachments at the same time. I can get it to fit on my 4 front teeth, but not on the one attachment on my left side. (My teeth go- aligner, tooth, aligner, aligner, aligner, aligner. Put this way, it is my first aligner that won't fit.) However, it does fit if I put that on first, but then the other attachments won't fit. When this happened yesterday, I thought maybe I should try to wear my last tray for a day longer in case I didn't wear it enough or something. That didn't work as I am having the same problem. So, right now, I have my new tray in, where the front attachments are all fitting nice and the invisalign is up against my teeth nice, everywhere except on that first left aligner. The rest of my teeth do not have that normal pressure you feel when you first put a new aligner, however, there is a bit of tenderness on that one tooth that isn't fitting properly. Should I just try to keep this tray in and see if it fits better after a few days, or should I go back to my last tray? My problem is that I live in a small Canadian Northern Town where the ortho only comes up ever 1.5 months and my next appointment is in a month. So, my BIG fear is that I will keep this ill-fitting tray in for the two weeks, and then try to go on to my next tray, but it won't fit at all due to my teeth aligning incorrectly. My fear is that I then won't be able to go back to tray 14 to maintain the alignment, as I will have screwed up my teeth formation over the two week period of wearing the ill-fitted 15 tray. Should I just keep my tray 14 in for another month until I see my ortho? I really don't want to set my treatment back a month, but even more so, I don't want to undo the work already done! Please help. I am quite concerned with no option of seeing an ortho for a month. Thank you for any help.

It is advisable to stay in the aligner that fits your teeth right now. There are a variety of reasons for the next one not fitting, but it is not possible to determine this without being seen. Here are some possibilites:

-inadequate daily wear is not seen immediately. It often takes many trays for them stop fitting properly.

-there may be an issue with the new aligner itself

-the movements prescribed by your doctor did not actually happen. In other words, just because the Clincheck video moved the teeth a certain way, does not mean the teeth will do the same thing in a real life situation.

Hope this helps!
