Water is about the only thing you can drink with the aligners in, unless of course you take them out for your fruit and then clean your teeth quickly and replace the aligners. Don't worry you will get used to them. I found at first that I had a terrible dry mouth, so the water really helped to have a sip every so often. If I go out in the evening on whilst I was on my holidays, I drink white white or beer with them in. In my opinion they are better in and drinking with them in than to take them out for a few hours. Admittedly, the aligners do need extra cleaning if you do this, but it doesn't do any damage to them. You will get into a routine and find what is best for you.

I drink mostly water only with them in, and I sip it throughout the whole day.

I also occasionally, if I get really hungry, drink a chocolate soya milkshake through a straw with them in, followed by a bit of water to rinse away any that might have gotton onto my teeth/aligners. But I try not to do that too often.

I'm paranoid about cavaties!

This is day two for me and the first day sitting at my desk all day with out snacking. My stomach is growling so loud that it sounds like a thunderstorm. I put some lemon in the water pretending it was lemonaid and that worked. Is is ok to drink water with lemon?

Also it is hard to get the aligners out to eat. Will they get better to take off, and how long before it gets easier?

Sorry for all the questions but I am just afraid that I might mess them up and my dentist didn't give me any instructions.

I am not sure about the water with lemon. I can certainly understand where this would make drinking water more appealing though (if you normally aren't a water drinker like me). My personal thought would be that although lemons have no sugar, the natural acid in fruit might not be good to sit in between your aligner and teeth. I just guessing here. Maybe just give your dentist a call to check. Better safe than sorry!

As for the aligners being tight to get off and on, this will become easier. I have had mine for a week now, and they are very easy to get off and on. I think its just a matter of learning what removal technique works best for your teeth. I dont have attachments yet however (I get these with tray three).

I hope this reply has helped!

The problem with sugars is that they are broken down by bacteria to produce acids. The lemon itself is acidic, so you're actually going straight to the acid step unfortunately. Sorry!

IDGET, I noticed that after about a week they were much easier to get off. I found that in the first week when I was about to take them out, if I took slow deliberate breaths while I counted to ten before I made any attempt, I would be a little more relaxed and the process would go more smoothly.

Yesterday I changed on to set 3, and this morning they were tought to get off again - although nowhere near as difficult as I found the very first set on the first couple of days.

Note, I have 13 attachments.

Ok, no lemon, but water is just not doing it for me. I bought a case of water and froze it last night. One friend bought me some crystal light lemonaid to put in the water since it has no sugars in it and told me to take small sips every now and them though a straw if I just have to have something to drink. I havn't did it yet but I might try it if I really feel like I need a fix.

Today seems to be better with all the salava making my stomach upset so maybe I an getting better. Now I just have to deal with my inner lips being sore from the aligner scraping up against them.

Thanks everybody for letting me vent, I dont know anybody who has these and I dont have anybody to talk to. I love this forum.

Oh, are attachments those bumps that they put on your teeth before they put the aligners in? Then I have 8, (4/4) is that bad or good?

How about iced fruit teas (get the herbal type with no caffeine so you don't accidentally drink too much caffeine this way). Of course, don't put any sugar in the tea -- you could use some artificial sweetener if you need it sweeter. Many of them are very good without adding any sugar. I particularly like the ones by Celestial Seasonings -- the "Zingers."

I hate to discourage you, but it really is not a good idea to drink ANYTHING other than water while wearing your aligners. After you get used to this very first tray, it will be much easier to remove your trays, and then you can do so and enjoy whatever you wish to eat or drink. Then clean your teeth and replace the trays. If you don't want to lose to much "wear" time, drink a protein shake or something similar to help curb your hunger quickly.

I did this throughout treatment and managed well. The only days I did not choose to snack were the first days in which I wore a new set of trays. I have always been a 6-meals-a-day sort of person, so it was an adjustment for me to snack less, but I now drink so much more water than I used to, and I enjoy it as much as food. Go figure... :D

This is one topic that I wish my dentist would have discussed with me before I chose to get Invisalign. I struggled with not being able to eat as much as I need to for a while before I figured it all out. Don't get me wrong, it's still not easy to do and I am still hungry all of the time but I've just gotten used to not eating as much. I'm already skinny by genetics so I have to eat a ton of food all day long to keep my weight up so Invisalign has made me lose a few pounds that I did not need to lose. Like Fantom Muse said above, I started just making protein shakes and taking them to work with me. I'm able to pop the trays off (that'll get easier for you) and chug a protein shake and then give a quick brush or rinse without having to floss and put them back in.

I've only got two more trays to go and I'm done and I seriously cannot wait to get back to eating the amount of calories that I need and not feeling hungry all of the time. I know I'll have to still wear a retainer full time for a while but there's a light at the end of the tunnel!

Good luck to you!

I usually stick to drinking only water. But, if im hungry, I drink a yogurt smoothie and go and rinse my mouth out afterwards.

no drinking? huh?

#14 Post by Hollybee »

i am on Day 1 of my Invisalign, and i was surprised to read this post - as my orthodontist told me i could drink whatever i wanted with my invisalign in, coffee, wine, juice, pop...he said it wouldn't make a differance as you don't wear them long enough to stain them. He also said you could eat soft foods like yourgot or pudding if you really wanted. Anyone else get similar advice?

I guess staining is one issue why people suggest not drinking/eating with them in. But more importantly, I don't think it's a good idea to leave food and sugar trapped between your teeth and aligners.
