Please help me decide...

#1 Post by moonlight »

I have thought for years about seeing an orthodondist for the overcrowding of my bottom teeth. I'm turning 50 in a few months and I think it's time i just put my fears aside and jump in and get this done. I know it's silly to ask but do people even get braces at this age? I live in Brooklyn, NY and would like to find an ortho in the area who works with adults so any recommendations would be appreciated. Thank you!

I'm 45 and just jumped in. I didn't think my teeth were too bad, I had a couple of oddly rotated teeth that I figured would be a quick fix. It turns out my bite is off and that its going to take 18 months with Invisalign (would be the same with braces too). Here is a link to my blog: http://gandsco.wordpress.com/
I think Invisalign has been great. You can eat what you want and no pokey wires. I even drink beer with them in, my orthodontist did when he wore them (just give them a rinse when you go to the bathroom & practice good oral hygiene).

Hi - It's never too late. I went for the plunge in Feburary. I will be 51 in September and have ceramic on top & a bite plate on the bottom for now. Normal silver will go on bottom in 6 months. Well Invislign would be nice in a perfect world for all of us. It works well if you dont have much to move. I could not do it. I live on Long Island and love my Ortho. I know that is too far for you. They are located in Wantagh. My Ortho does all the work on you personally. A lot of places have assistants do your monthly adjustments and then the doc comes in to double check. I am paying tons of $$$ and want the best. Another thing to consider it the location of the dental chairs. I dont want to laying next to tons of kids like an assembly line. I am too old for that. LOL
Good luck and enjoy this site. Everyone is very helpful and cordial.

Never too late! I am 41 and am just about finished with mine. I'm further upstate, just about smack in the middle of the state - probably a good 4-5 hours from you so mine won't do any good either! Good luck!!

It's never too late!

I'm 38 and hopefully my trays will be here anytime soon next month. My ortho is great and very experienced with Invisalign, but I'm not sure you'd want to come to Europe once a month for your adjustments :-*

Best of luck with your treatment, it's totally worth it!

Thank you all for responding. I've narrowed my search to two orthos so i think i 'll just take the plunge and go in for a consult. I'll let you know what happens.

I'm 27 and I wish I hadn't waited as long as I did for this

Glad you decided to start the process and I hope you see it through. With life expectancy these days having your teeth done at 50 still means you can get 30+ years of enjoyment out of straight and healthy teeth :)
