Alcohol and Invisalign

#1 Post by Abigailmac »

Hi guys
I just got my first set of retainers today, and apart from hating all the filing and needing a few blobs on my front teeth, it's ok.. ish.
I am just a bit worried about going out and drinking and dancing with the invisalign in. I normally drink red wine, which am guessing is out, tequila, rum etc., and am wondering if I can go out and drink these drinks with the invisalign in. Might I have to change the habits of 14 years??!!

Does anyone know what the 'good' drinks are with invisalign - I mean alcohol by the way. In the day, I only drink water or green tea anyway, which I think is ok.

Thanks
Abby

i've been wearing my 1st aligner for 3 weeks now (poppin the 2nd in tonight) and i've gone out drinking twice with them. lots of beer for about 4 hours each time. i tried to rinse my mouth with water whenever possible, though. and, brushed as soon as possible afterwards. no problems for me yet.

Ah, nice one, thanks.
I just had a few glasses of wine with lunch and all seems ok. The big test will be saturday night!

I think the best drinks for trays is a simple 1 try and drink something that is as clear as possible:

Clear Spirits
A variety of alcohol drinks using many bas ingredients and having diverse characters and flavours.
The foundation is a fermented base or mash that is then distilled, often it is matured but sometimes not. Most regions of the world have their own variations. They can drunk of added to a dishes, depending on their character.
Some of the most notable are;
Arack - a straw coloured spirit
Gin - a clear spirit with a distinctive flavour of juniper berries and spices.
Grappa - an Italian spirit made from the pulp left over from the wine making process.
Ouzo - a anise flavoured spirit made from wine or grain in Greece.
Poteen - an Irish spirit distilled from potatoes, often illegally.
Sake - a Japanese double fermented spirit made from rice wine, often drunk warmed.
Schnapps - a high alcohol spirit from central Europe, often flavoured with caraway.
Slivovitz - a potent fermented plum spirit from the Balkans.
Tequila - a Mexican spirit fermented from a succulent of the cactus family.
Vodka - made from grain, grape or potato in Russia and Poland, its name means 'little water'.

I drink anything with them in (although I've never tried red wine since I prefer white anyway). But I'll drink diet coke and rum or whiskey and they are fine. I really don't think the plastic stains at all. Just think....if you buy a 20oz bottle of coke, is the plastic bottle it comes in stained brown...no, it's clear. and it's probably been exposed to the plastic for months!

That's a good point about the coke bottle! I've been taking the aligners out for happy hour. I'm going to leave them in. But I hope the beer doesn't collect in there and my mouth looks like a snow globe.

I went out drinking 1 time for about 4 hours and I took them out.

I also have the bad habit of sneaking a few ciggies while I drink my beers so I didn't want to drink and smoke with them in.....

I am hoping it didn't do any harm, I couldn't just pop them in and out and in and out to smoke ect...

staining them yellow would be nasty

ugh these things are annoying!

apart from the main downside of smoking (death ect  ) when u have finished treatment putting a cig in your mouth does distort teeth and you could end up back in braces or mabe worse in a coffin as u can tell im anti smoking, i think just like the golden ticket in willy wonka and the chocolate factory i think they should put something else in them so you die in an instant rather than a slow death because mabe a lot less people would smoke, its because its a slow death people think it will not be me it will be someone else and of course there`s always the line i know someone who smokes 50 a day and lived to a thousand but there is always gonna be a small percentage of people who will never get cancer so cigs will not effect them, anyway ill stop preaching now

im totally with you, diehard. it's bad for your health, bad for the health of others around you, and it's EXPENSIVE! i honestly have never been able to understand why people do it and why people, if they do smoke, don't try really hard to quit.

...but that's getting off topic. i could go on for awhile. :P

Okay. being a University Student and to be quite honest a heavy drinker, I was in fear of what I could and could not drink at the bar. In the beginning I would drink only vodka and water. No sugar nothing. Then after a few months, I needed to add flavour back into my life:) I Drink almost anything except any red drink. Including red wine and red Jello shooters. I have tried with my teeth in, and they do stain. The stain comes off, with some scrubbing, but if you're out on the town you dont want to stop and have to clean your trays after everydrink. I also stay away from really frothy drinks like daquiries, only because the mixture can get stuck in your trays.
In general I stick with fairly clear drinks, but dont be afraid to have coloured drinks. Just make sure that if you are drinking stuff with sugar in it, you clean the crap out of your trays before you go to bed.
Oh and with the smoking thing, they done really stain your trays, they just create a bigger plaque build-up so they need to be cleaned more often. I quit smoking 9 weeks ago, and noticed an immediate change in the cleanliness of my trays.
Well thats my two cents:) Good luck, and cheers! St pattys day is right around the corner:)

I only smoke when I drink, and I only drink once a month sometimes less.

and we are talking about drinking here not exactly a healthy behavior. If you are drinking more then 1-2 drinks at one sitting you are damaging your health.

technically worldwide alcohol abuse causes as much death and disability as measles and malaria and results in more years lost to death and disability than are caused by tobacco or illegal drugs
