Question about retainers

Hello,

I have finished my threatment (took over 2 years) with Invisalign 6 months ago. Now I have got two kind of retainers:

1. Permanent Retainers
2. Retainers which I have to wear over night (Binator)

Now the question is if I can leave the retainers off which I wear over night for a few days or 1 week or so. I would like to get a toungue piercing  and in the beginning I think wearing these retainers over night is not possible.

Do you think that this might be a problem?

someone has to tell you this, it might as well be me: wear your retainer as prescribed by your ortho. You just went through 2 years of braces, don't let your teeth slip back to where they were. And please skip the tongue piercing. Instead of everyone looking at your now beautiful teeth and radiant smile, they will be focused on the ugly tongue piercing and noticing how funny you sound when you talk.

Ellen's response may be worded quite a bit harsher than I would have stated it, but she has a point.

I would also like to add my unsolicited opinion of tongue piercings.
Every female friend I have who has gotten one has taken them out for one major reason: inappropriate comments about blowjobs.

BJs are the first thing that will come to many many many people's minds when they notice that you have a tongue piercing...even if they don't say anything.

If you are cool with that, then go for it. However, you still need to determine if it's worth it to compromise 2 years worth of ortho. Ask your dentist.

Obviously having your retainers out longer than your Ortho suggests really isn't a good idea.

Personally, I would wait a few months then get the piercing - if you really want it. I wouldn't risk messing up 2 years worth of treatment for a piercing.

You best bet is to ask your Ortho though, they will know best.

I notice most people who have their tongue pierced tend to always do this thing with their teeth. They stick their tongue out, so the piercing/stud goes in front of their top teeth. They pull their tongue back in slightly and the piercing hits on the front teeth.

Google 'tongue piercings damage teeth' and sites will come up telling you how it can cause gum and tooth problems.

Anyway, you asked about having your retainers out for a few days... not opinions on tongue peircings LOL. If you want one get one... some people like them some don't. I found ellens comment about ugly tongue peircing a bit off. We're all different, some people like tattoos, others think they look awful. Who are we to judge.

Yes,

please don't take my comment as a criticism about tongue rings.

The reason I shared it was because years ago I wanted to get one and asked my friends what they thought. That was when I heard over and over again why the women I knew felt the need to take their tongue piercings out.

I know it's completely unsolicited advice, but it's coming from someone who totally understands wanting to get one!
