Aligner not covering molar?

Finally my refinements arrived. They gave me the first 3 trays yesterday and I never even looked at them until last night. (I change trays before bed, so other than "fitting" the newest one they are giving me, I just get my new trays and be on my way)
When I put the new one in at the office I didn't really notice the back of the top aligner being different. I generally take them out from the other side and the tech didn't mention anything other than "they are trying to do something on that side". I looked at that side later and figured it was trying to straighten the last molar since it kicks back a little bit. But I don't see how a tray with no back can kick it forward. Did that make any sense?
All 3 trays that I have are the same so I don't know if it is a manufacturing thing or if it really is meant to only cover 1/3 of the last molar. Looking at the aligner in my mouth, I can see how if the molar moved a bit it would fit the tray better, but still without the rounded back it seems weird.
