Opinion, please

Long story short: (***Full story on my blog: http://waldomouth.blogspot.com/ )
I just completed 18 months of active treatment and refinements, with existing veneers on my top front teeth. It went quite smoothly. Never a problem with Invisalign in general, nor the veneers in particular, though I know there was a risk of damage to the veneers. Though they did not look perfect, they were serviceable, and I decided to keep them for another year to avoid another big expense.
Ortho and I decided upon Essix retainers made in office instead of Vivera retainers from Invisalign or fixed retainers. I insert the upper, it feels tight, he says it is supposed to be tight, I push it in, and my veneers promptly crack off. Going to cost me near $7,000 to replace them .
So - the opinion part - was it ortho's fault, and if so, should he pay for all or part of my new veneers? I say he bears some responsibility (maybe not 100%, but 50% or 25%) , he says he is 0% responsible .
