Only 5 months to go.... and just got elastics

#1 Post by InviSmile »

Hi all, new to the forums.
However, not new to Invisalign! My treatment is 26U/29L. I'm on tray 18 for both.
Ortho gave me elastics on Tuesday to correct a slight overbite and boy oh boy do they ever hurt. I thought it was pretty late in my treatment to get elastics. I wear medium ones during the day and heavy ones at night and the pain is excruciating. I've never had elastics before so am completely unaware about how long the pain lasts. Can someone help me out? I don't relish the thought of being in constant pain for another 6 months! My teeth are tender for about 3 days after I change trays but not sure if rubber bands are different. Will I eventually get used to them? Does the pain go away after a few days?

Thanks!

You should call your ortho asap and seek advice on your situation. You should not have constant and excruciating pain during orthodontic treatment.

When I had elastics, my ortho told me to start with the medium ones and switch to the heavy ones only after a few weeks. He also reduced the daily wear time after a few months when I told him my jaws felt very tired from the constant pressure. You do get more used to them after a while but I didn’t find the pressure on the jaws lessened much since I put in new elastics a few times a day.

How are your elastics conneted to invisalign? I was not aware that this is possible.
