Almost time

#1 Post by reba678 »

Hi everyone,

I'm so glad I found this board! Wish I would've found it sooner...but better late than never!

My name is Rebecca, I'm 28, and will be getting braces in a few weeks. It's something that I've been wanting to do for several years, we didn't have the money when I was younger, but I'm finally ready to do it. My teeth aren't that bad and everyone already says "your teeth look fine!" but it bothers me enough that I'm getting it done.

I've been to 4 different orthodontists over the past 2 years and finally found one. He came highly recommended by one of my clients who is an oral surgeon. And I need 4 extractions (all bicuspids) and my client is doing that a week from Wednesday, FOR FREE! Yay! Looks like he'll be getting some free massages for a while.

I'm hoping to have the braces put on 1-2 weeks after the extractions and after reading a lot of the posts and seeing a bunch of pictures, I'm really excited! I'm going to try and take pics every week so I can see the progress :) He is doing clear brackets on top with the metal wire and metal brackets on the bottom. He said because of my bite, I might chip the ceramic on the bottom.

I'm sure I'll be here posting lots of updates and asking lots of questions! I was really apprehensive about having braces and trying to have a social life (I'm single and get to enjoy the wacky world of dating, ha) and feel like people won't want to date me because of braces, but if that's the case, then I don't want to go out with them anyway!

Nice "meeting" you all, look forward to getting to know everyone!

Hi Rebecca,

Welcome to the board. I think you will find most people on this website, supportive and helpful. I have learned so much from reading the various posts. If you ever have a question or concern, post it and you will find in most cases someone has been through it.

It seems that you have done alot of research which I know makes you feel better. Isn't it interesting the people that we meet throughout our lives, like your client being an oral surgeon. I'm curious, is the oral surgeon the person that got you to think about going through ortho treatment or were you thinking about it before he became your client?

I, too had a difficult time making the decision of getting braces due to the visible aspect of the braces and being an adult. I have never regretted for a second making the decision of going through ortho treatment. Yes, I'm still a bit self conscious about my braces but enjoy my ortho appts. To date, I haven't experienced any pain or discomfort with the expander or braces, have not had to take any pain relievers and hope my luck continues. If not, I can deal with it.

I will be getting my lower braces in about 6 weeks and am excited about getting them because this is just another step forward.

I hope your orthodontist and his staff are nice because I think this is the reason why I have a great attitude towards my ortho treatment.

My ortho treatment was estimated at 20 months, including the time in the expander. How long is yours?

Good luck and keep us posted.

Hi ssfw,

No, I have been wanting to do it for several years, but getting a solid recommendation from my client for the ortho I'm going to really helped. I know I'm in good hands now, plus, the fact that I'm saving however much I'm saving by him doing the extractions for free, well, that was a big seller ;)

I'm really getting excited! I would have the extractions done this week but I have a wedding to go to on Saturday, so I can wait another week....
