molar build up woes

#1 Post by teri1112 »

I think what I was unable to correctly articulate in my earlier post was the fact that I have molar build ups on my back molars on each side. I'm   having one heck of a time maneuvering the tricky practice of eating!

It's really impossible to chew anything since my teeth don't come together.

:?: Questions:
1. Is it common for new Damon wearers to require build ups?
2. Do you usually still have to have them after your first adjustment? I got my brances on Friday and my next adjustment is March 28th.
3. On the average, how long does it take for the inside of your mouth to "toughen up"? I've already used 1/2 a bottle of Ambesol since Saturday.

Sorry for all of the questions. I don't want my Dr. to think I'm a big baby...

Hi,
I too had ramps built on my back molars. That is to keep your top teeth from knocking the brackets off of the bottom teeth--at least that's what I remember. I'm sure if I'm not correct, someone else will post and let you know!

It felt really weird for a bit, but you'll get used to it. I've been braced since the end of September and I don't even notice the ramps anymore. Best of luck.

Hi teri. I feel your pain. I was braced about 8 days before you and have molar build-ups. Eating does get a little easier, but man it still feels so weird! I wondered also if I'd have to have these things the entire time. Hope not - for our sakes

Hope things get better.

Hi Teri,

I don't know about molar buildups as I did not need them but I am sure that you will start to get used to the new hardware pretty soon. I have damon brackets and I think it took a couple of weeks before the inside of my cheeks fully adjusted. I have had mine since this past summer and there are times when I still will use wax. At my last adjustment I got elastics and that has taken some time to get used to them.

I hope I haven't been too negative because I think for the most part the damon brackets have been pretty easy to wear. I really believe you will not only see improvement in your smile very soon but the comfort level will definately increase.

Keep the faith and hope your break-in period ends quickly.

Hi Teri,

I didn't have the build ups, but just after I got my braces (on October 23, 2007), I was a little panic-y because my back teeth didn't touch at all and I thought it would stay that way and I would starve to death! I found that my teeth started to fit together better after 5 -7 days. It didn't feel completely like before I had braces, but it got better and better each day. Today, after being braced for 3 months and going through 2 adjustments, I can say that my teeth felt a little weird and my bite changed a little after each adjustment, but it only took a few days to get used to it.

As for having a ripped up mouth, I thought the first 2 weeks were the toughest. The skin was not used to having constant contact with the wires, and it needed to toughen up. I found that it was completely manageable with wax and Rincinol (your ortho should give you some anesthetic mouth rinse), and I didn't need either after the 2nd week.

Just prepare yourself for the change as best you can, stick to soft foods for a couple of weeks, and have some faith that things will improve quickly! When you see how quickly your teeth move, you will be amazed!

Take care,
Christy
