How about braces in late 50s?
Moderator: bbsadmin
well, it seems the flu finally got a hold of me (early Sat morning) and I just rescheduled my tuesday morning extractions to March 8th. I'm kinda down about it, but the cast comes off next Monday, so at least I've got that going for me.
This flu thing is HORRIBLE! Body aches, chills, fever, wicked headache and sore throat....and I NEVER get sick! I'm a real pretty site today; limping around in a cast with braces and the flu! YUMMY!!!

Hi Athy and everyone.....
Spring is definitely coming....and not a moment too soon! Had my four extractions done this past saturday morning.....I went under anethesia so I didn't have to deal with the whole thing (whimp). I have been taking advil almost every four hours since.....I called the OS on Tuesday, because the jaw pain is waking me up. They did remind me that it was surgery and it was going to take some time to heal. (I'm so impatient, huh?)
yesterday was my first adjustment. I was not ready for that. VERY painful. I even shed a couple tears (how embarrassing!) Today, even the advil isn't quite doing it. I just need to focus on the outcome and work and let go of all the pain, right?
I think once the pain subsides, I will also be happy to show off my braces.
What do YOU do for the pain (post-extractions / post-adjustments)?

1/28/08 ~ ceramic uppers / metal lowers ~ molar bands (same day install). Four pre-molar extractions 3/8/08.
Last adjustment: October 20th (new molar brackets, oh joy!)
Next adjustment: November 19th
Estimated jail sentence: 24-30 months!

At the age of 48, in December 2005, I got braced. Monday, they're coming off! I will be nearly 51. It's been entirely worth it. I've actually rather enjoyed having braces in a perverse sort of way - my style has always been funky, fun, silly, etc. That said, I'm ready to have them off and be able to floss properly once again.
I see lots of adults in my ortho's office, including some patients who are clearly older than I am. We're all happy campers now. :)
Here's my current look. By Monday the tin grin will be gone. You can see more pictures of my journey by searching on Marzipan. I'm in the Our Braces Stories somewhere.

It's spring somewhere...
but so far not here in Western Washington. Brrr! It snowed last weekend. Highly unusual. But since I have dogs to walk I have to bear it...it's sort of fun walking these two bigs dogs and flashing a full metal mouth at the people we pass. I'm sort of disappointed that so far no-one has pointed and stared....
I have about 728 days more to go so perhaps by then I will no longer feel like the Bride of Frankenstein!

I'm about to take the plunge!
I hope I can join this forum, since you are all younger than I am! (I'm 60). I went through a period of cold feet, but now, thanks to the encouragement of people on this message board, I'm going through with it on Wednesday! I'm getting damon braces, top and bottom. I'm a little worried about the pain I've read about, but hey, I had 2 kids with natural childbirth!
I am looking forward to keeping up with the people on this forum, and will post with my "news" when the event takes place.
Keep smiling!

They're on!
Hi Athy and everyone,
My braces are on and so far, so good. Very strange to feel all that metal in my mouth, and my molars don't meet since my top teeth bump into the brackets on the lower level. This is making eating interesting. Only milkshake, oatmeal and a cream soup today. The doc says the teeth will be moving soon (in a week?!?), making chewing easier, plus he put ramps on the molars to help with that. Anyone else have that experience?
No discomfort so far, I've been taking ibuprophen to head it off. I'm glad the initial hours are over, now I just have 18 months to go! I took some pictures, but I think they show too much of my face, so I'll retake them and see about uploading them.
Thanks in advance for any words of wisdom you may have!

Soft foods...
Hey I can relate to your eating issues. My braces went on last week and I am having fun since I had 4 teeth removed too. So any chewing which happens has to go WAY to the back of my mouth!
I am doing oatmeal, smoothies, soup and pasta. Last night, enchiladas....
I also found a gargle in the store that's used for mouth irritation, because I am getting sores on the sides of my tongue where the upper internal bands rub on my tongue when I chew.
The good news - my snaggletooth (the front tooth which really overlapped) has visibly moved already! My ortho promised me I'd see movement within the month and he was right. Even my husband can see it and he is not the kind of person who would normally do so...

tooth movement and soft foods
So, Bizrul, you've seen a tooth move in just one week? That gives me hope! My braces went on 3 days ago, and I'm dealing with a lot of spots in my mouth that are rubbing on the brackets. It seems after I put on some wax, a new spot pops up. I'm going to look for that mouthwash you mention. And maybe I'll try some enchiladas tonight! Thanks for the tips!
My new avatar!
So, here I am in my braced glory in the form of my new avatar. I hope it works! Each day is getting better in terms of soreness and ability to get my molars to meet (this is day 5). Still struggling with flossing in the back of my mouth! I bought a waterpic on the advice of many in the forum, which really seems to be doing a good job.
Are there any more 60 year olds out there? I encountered quite a few surprised comments today at church, curious to know why I've done this to myself.
Athy,
I'm sorry to hear that you are having a tough time. I thought the only time you needed wax was when you first get braces. Do you mean each adjustment can make different sore spots in your mouth? Oh no! I am just getting over the need to use a lot of wax! Oh well, it's good to be forewarned, I guess!
