Newbie to Braces

#1 Post by Star »

Hi I'm Star 32 yrs old and just got my first set of braces on last Tuesday Jan 20th. So far I only have my uppers on. I'm using the Damon system. My ortho was thrown for a loop when he saw my mouth. I have a missing lateral on my top so he's creating space so that after treatment I will have to have a prosectic tooth attached. Also I have a sever under bite on my lower jaw so I have been fitted for a bite plate with rubber bands that I will have to wear 24/7 except when eating or brushing for possibly 6-8 months. So far for the worst part is the bite plate. Talking has become a challenge in itself, dry mouth, spitting when I talk or no one able to understand me. Makes yelling at the kids hard, I'm sure they're ok with it...lol I totally forgot I was even wearing braces once the bite plate went in. So the braces has been a piece of cake.

I look forward to the help advice along my long journey to a beautiful smile!

Star, I have been wearing bite plates for 15 years. I have had 3 different kinds. The first one was a lower. I wore it out and had to go to another dentist who said I needed an upper one instead. I wore it out and went without one for a couple of weeks and was very sorry. I have been with the third dentist since July. He put in a lower plate during the day that I take out at night and wear an upper plate. You will get more used to the plate. Be sure you keep the wires tight enough so you can't move it with your tongue. I had brackets put on the six front top teeth on Wed. Next month we continue adding brackets and I will have impressions made for an upper spreader. I still wear the plates and will for a while.
Hang in there, you'll get better at talking. By the way, I am 55.
