hello everyone - braces for the second time for me!

#1 Post by buttterflyjumper »

stumbled onto this forum and it seems to be the perfect place for me!

i had braces as a teenager, but found out recently that i need them again. i have been wearing a mouthguard for the past 4 years due to TMJ/jaw pain, which apparently caused my teeth to shift into a very severe "open bite" - the only teeth that touched together were the very back molars!

i just got my braces put on 5 days ago - ceramic on top and bottom.

i have been in a lot of pain, but am learning to adapt to a more liquid/mushy diet and am finally doing better! additionally, my open bite has already improved drastically, as more teeth are touching together now! it seems like a great support group that you all have going here. nice to meet you all!

Hi,
I had braces, too when I was younger and am planning to get them again, partly due to the support I've gotten here at this site. My first ortho appt. is next week. Like you, I also have TMJ issues, but never had a nightguard. My bottom front teeth are chipped and broken into the shape of the top teeth now 'cause the top front ones slam into the bottom front ones when I bite down or chew. I have to literally clench down hard for my molars to touch. I grind & clench my teeth sometimes at night too. But I'm very motivated now to finally do something about the whole thing. Wearing braces wasn't too bad the 1st time... but I do find myself wondering how it will be this time.
I was wondering ...how did it feel when you first got your braces this 2nd time...and are you getting used to them quicker than the first time out? :)

Second time for me too!

I also am doing this for a second time around. I had braces for 4 years as a kid from 4th thru 7th grade. I went to a dentist and not an orthodontist and also decided I didn't care about my overbite at that time. I also had an impacted tooth which is why my current dentist talked me into the braces again. I also have a little bit of popping in my jaw so I am hoping that the elastics and forsus springs (if I have to do the springs) will end up taking care of that as well.

I am four months along and am finding that as an adult, even though it is painful at times, it is easier to take care of your teeth and do or not do the things you should since I'm paying for it now and not my parents. I got power chains and elastics on two days ago, the pain is getting better and I don't think it will be too hard to keep them on 24/7 (minus eating and brushing).

Good luck to you - hope it goes well. How long do you think you will have to wear them this time? I am expected to have mine for 18 months.
