40 yo newbie with sensitive teeth

#1 Post by MerryKate »

I'm in week 2 of braces, and mostly past the worst of the pain. I had 4 extractions and getting those sockets to heal is an ongoing problem. My front teeth hurt like mad the first week, but now my upper molars are sore. I've always had sensitive teeth and a couple of big fillings in those molars, but they're hurting in an entirely different way from the front teeth. Is it normal to have senstitivity problems from braces?

Hi MerryKate!
I have wondered this too! My back molars have some large fillings in them and that side is where the spacers hurt the worst. I will ask my ortho about the sensitivity question tomorrow, before getting braced. With the spacers, they mentioned that my contacts were extremely tight so it would be very uncomfortable. Although, that molar with the filling has throbbed something fierce.
Great question, I would think. I will post what I am told but keep in mind..I am not ortho and am just playing telephone. :D

I have been picking the brain of a co-worker who had braces in the past. Apparently this is normal sensitivity. Good to know, not so much fun to living with. That's life, I guess. :?
I've had a lot of sinus headaches in the past, and apparently having braces magnifies every bit of pressure. I would still be interested in hearing what your ortho has to say. I'm going to check with my orthodontist when I see her again in a few weeks, as well.

I did find a sensitivity reducer by Orajel which is supposed to last for 3 months. It took about 24 hours to really take effect, but it's working - I can even use my electric toothbrush again, which was excruciating before. So if you're having real problems, give that stuff a try.

Cheers for the Orajel tip! In my case, the braces are a slight annoyance compared to the spacers. 30 mins with the spacers out and the throbbing really subsided. Considering the large fillings I have on that back molar, and the crown I have on the other side, I really expected more pain once the metal was in. It hasn't been the case for me.
Also, I have cracks in my four front teeth due to a cricket ball hitting my mouth and that is quite sensitive to cold and pressure. It's sensitivity has been increased with the braces. Too true about that. I will get that gel to ease it.
My ortho told me that the fillings shouldn't cause any extra discomfort as long as bacteria stays out of them. Please do share if yours gives a different reply.
BTW- love your signature quote.

Best regards!
