New and just getting ready for braces eek!

#1 Post by Dav30 »

Hi, I am 34 years old from UK and just starting my treatment for braces and then jaw surgery. I have an overbite and am extremely gummy which needs to be corrected. My teeth are ok, pretty straight, just stick out a little at the front but obviously need braces to put teeth into correct position before surgery. I have just had the metal bands put in on my back teeth (only yesterday) and they are already causing me pain and discomfort and putting me off eating! I am due to get braces fitted next week. I have ordered online some dental wax to put over the huge metal protusions from the clips so hopefully this will help. Can anyone let me know how long it takes for your mouth to get used to wearing braces? As my treatment is on the NHS I can only have the full metal braces. I have to wear the braces for approximately a year before I have the surgery, then six months after surgery. Then I will need to wear a retainer for 3 months full time and then 3 months just at night.

I was a bit naive not to have even thought about what pain I would endure with braces, clearly there will be pain after surgery, but honestly I never even thought about the pain and discomfort braces would cause! Silly I know. But I know it will all be worthwhile, I have been very insecure about my mouth/teeth for years now and wasn't even aware that there was treatment available to me to correct it. So am very happy that I am getting it done.

Looking forward to viewing this site and reading about other people's stories.

Congrats on getting started! Everybody is different in how long it takes them to get used to braces. The first day or two are really weird though. I was one of the lucky ones and haven't had much pain. It took me about 3 days before eating felt somewhat normal again and about a week to figure out what to do with my lips when I spoke. After a month, it all seems routine now. I certainly still feel them and think about them a lot, but it's no longer all consuming.

Hi Dav30!

Welcome! I recently started my orthodontic treatment and will required jaw surgery in 16-18 mths. however, I have cross bite, and underbite and will require my top jaw moved forward / also have bottom moved back if needed. Days before getting my braces I shared many of the same concerns are yourself: will I endure much pain, what kinds of foods can I eat etc.

It took me 2 days to get used to eating with braces. however, certain foods require more getting used to, namely sandwiches! bread will not be your friend at first. bread will in fact hate you and your love from bread, will diminish. *shakes fist at breads*

Hope your first days of braces and the treatment itself goes well. Look forward to reading about your progress.

From Canada with smiles,

S

Dav30 I'm totally in the same boat as you are. I got braces and never thought it would be painful. I thought it would cause discomfort, but that is it. Now I'm shocked and I don't know that I would do it had I known it would be painful like this. I've only got spacers in now, braces next week! :soremouth:

Thank you for your replies! I have now my full set of braces, got them only yesterday. So far it isn't too bad, not as bad as I thought it would be actually. It feels very weird at the moment. My teeth are slightly sore and hurt a bit when I eat but nothing major. I have put wax on the places that have been rubbing so that has eased things a little. The main thing, although it's probably a good thing, is that because eating now is such a chore and I have to brush every time, I am no longer snacking and just eating 3 meals a day. Am feeling peckish but like I said probably not a bad thing, I could do with losing a few pounds

I am looking forward to seeing an improvement. Will try to post some pics on here in next few days.
