Hello again!
Any one who read my previous post would know that I was terrified of having an extraction, the fact I had to have one almost put me off having a brace (big baby!!) Anyway, my legs somehow dragged me to the dentists yesterday for my upper, left, pre-molar extraction. I have to admit i cried before I even got in the chair! (told you I was a baby) After lots of reassurance from my lovely dentist, he went ahead and got on with the job in hand. Did I feel anything? No, but the tugging, pulling & grinding feeling was unpleasant. Just when I thought he must be done, Problem - my root had snapped off & I needed to be sent to a specialist after I'd had a few xrays, as my dentist could not get it. So after all that I had to wait very nervously for another 4 hours before I was in another dentist chair!! I have to say it was horrible & really shook me up. It didn't hurt at all but the tugging, digging & drilling was horrid. 20 minutes after starting she finally managed to cut out the last 3mm of root that had snapped - and I was sent home, feeling very sorry for myself and with 2 stitches to boot!!
I have obviously inspected my 'gap' and it looks so huge now after the dentist made it bigger to reach the root. I'm having my brace in 9 days and am hoping it heals well before then - she cut up into my gum so my gum seems to have a 'v' shape dent in it! i am a worrier and am thinking that this could somehow affect my brace???? I hope not. the way I'm feeling today I actually am wondering 'what am I doing to myself?' I feel really low and am wondering if I'm strong enough to go through this and have I made the right decision. Positive thoughts please!!!
Thanks all for 'listening!!'

Re: Extraction nightmare!!!
Ack, sorry to hear that the extraction got all complicated for you. :/ Hope it heals fast. I had my wisdom teeth extracted and I believe it was healed within a week - so I think you should be fine for your brace day.
Did they give you any painkillers? Or you can try to take some ibprofen or tylonel for the pain. I wasn't in pain for too long, but I did suffer a nasty cold.
Anyways, hear's hoping things get better soon for you!

Re: Extraction nightmare!!!
I can definitely relate to your story, although I had 6 teeth removed on the same day (all 4 wisdoms and 2 upper Premolars) I was very very scared and had to take a valium to calm down. even then I had a big melt down immediately after being shot up & numbed! I was balling, turned all red, the works. lol I also had a issue with 3 of my teeth not wanting to come out, they had to be broken into pieces before they'd come out. I also had to be get more numbing shots in the middle of it all, because I started to feel pain when he was trying to pull the 3rd one out. The noises were absolutely mortifying, disgusting and terrifying to hear! so sorry you had such a bad experience, getting a tooth pulled is no fun at all!!!!
I got my wire put in a week after my extractions & they were very careful not to disturb the extraction sites. I wouldnt worry to much about the "V" shape thing, i had that also and today you cant even tell i had any teeth pulled as the gaps are now completely closed up. They were Completely healed up within 2-3 weeks or so, just be very careful not to chew anything hard on them. Water mixed with salt is a great rinse it helped mine heal much easier and eased the pain of sores I got from the brackets it will heal soon enough & before you know it, it'll all be a memory and you'll start seeing your teeth change and move it is so awesome. I laugh about it now, but back then it was terrible!! Keep taking pain killers if you have them, or ibuprofen is good too! Your teeth are going to look amazing when all is said and done, I never could have imagined my teeth looking this good. I sometimes wonder why i put it off for so long (extractions being one of those reasons lol) But i have no regrets and all the discomfort and pain was so worth it, since now i'll be getting my braces off this may! good luck keep us posted on your progress and i hope you feel better

Re: Extraction nightmare!!!
I'm so sorry you had to go through all of that. I, too, had a part of my tooth that they could not extract (an upper wisdom tooth), so they just decided to leave it in there. But I opted for the nitrous oxide (laughing gas) because whatever they were going to do in there, I wanted no knowledge of. I honestly think our minds and imaginations make things much worse than they actually are (at least, mine does!)
I also had my upper-left premolar extracted. On April 9, 2010, I had all of my brackets put on except for the one on the tooth they were going to extract; and also had my wires put on, which stopped at that tooth. Five days after my extraction, the ortho extended the wire across the extraction gap, and I was all good to go. I will admit, I had no pain or excess bleeding at all. The gap did look about twice the size of the tooth they pulled, though! I called it my "Grand Canyon". Now, 10 months later, it's almost closed up.
Trust me: Once you get your brackets on, and you start to see results, you will be SO happy you got them! I even have elastics on, and I feel bad having to take them out to eat, because I want them in as much as possible.
You will be just fine. Keep coming here for inspiration!

Re: Extraction nightmare!!!
That V-shape is the normal shape that an extraction site has; it's probably not from cutting. Don't worry, it will fill in.

Thank you all for your encouraging comments!! I feel a bit better, though still sore & still taking painkillers - hasn't stopped me having some lovely 3 course dinners on my holidays this week though
