I have one more question, is it ok to use an electric toothbrush on braces? I have read that it is but my sonic one seems way too powerful. Do you just use it like a normal toothbrush straight over the top as well as above and below? I don't want to do any damage

No worry. ceramic brackets fairly strong. you will likely hurt your gum before you hurt your braces if you brush too hard. Dont worry about debonding either, unless you deliberately try to dislodge them by forcefully jamming the brush against the brackets.
My dentist told me it's fine to use electric brush, there should even be special brush heads for people with braces but haven't got around to check them out yet.
