I'm in Oban and also travel down to Glasgow to meet surgeons etc.
It's been more than three years since I started this journey and will likely be 4 when I finish - maybe 5, I could be 45 or 46 which terrifies me!
Yes they've taken on another surgeon who I met and seems lovely but I had mr koppel for sarpe and would prefer to stick with him. There was raw sewage coming down the ceiling into the theatre of the new hospital so they did no ops in feb/march. I'm hoping to leave scotland as my mother in NI is very ill and this treatment is turning into a bit of a nightmare. My underbite is appalling (didn't have one before, sarpe and braces created it) and yes that's good apparently as it shows I needed this treatment - but i'm getting more and more self conscious and very fed up waiting. My sarpe was successful but in my opinion the ortho let it all relapse as I've lost half or most of expansion (in words of my ortho in oban who even suggested I might need sarpe again.) The results are not what I had expected and my arch is not normal. I teach and have watched pupils with conventional exo anders widen their jaws in the same period far more successfully (with the same Oban ortho! )
However - it has to said I'm grateful for the fact it's all free. And I am judging a job half done.
Hi,
So sorry to hear about your mother and hope that her condition improves and hope that if you do relocate to NI that you are treated by a better ortho.
I've read a few of your posts as you seem to be the only person in Scotland actively on this forum.
Oban to Glasgow is quite a distance. It is worrying that your expansion has relapsed as I was led to believe that once the expansion is stopped and left in place that the bones fuse together into their new position. It's also worrying that you are on the waiting list for double jaw surgery whilst your expansion is not what it needs to be.
I was told there was a 6 - 9 week operations back log they need to deal with but didn't know the reason was raw sewage!
It has been 3 years and and 5 months that I have been waiting for any treatment which is bloody ludicrous. I did at one point briefly consider getting private healthcare to speed things along but the costs for this were too high. On the plus side following my complaint I have now been told by the complaints manager that I have been prioritised and he hopes to come back to me within 2 weeks with a date for surgery.
I suspect that I will also develop an underbite once braced as my lower teeth tilt inwards. It's disheartening to hear that you are increasingly self conscious and hope that you can stay positive. I too am very self conscious due to my asymmetry and there are days when I feel uncomfortable / nervous just walking up the street on my own or in social situations, which I know sounds ridiculous but my self confidence has been chipped away over the years due to drunken comments or funny looks from some people. I can't imagine what I will be like braced up after sarpe..
I would write to Glasgow to explain the expansion issue to make sure that when your date approaches they don't turn around and say that they cannot do the operation because further expansion is required.
Do you know how long a wait you have until your jaw surgery?
