Braces soon, I hope!

#1 Post by Roisin »

Hi :)

I'm new here, and I joined because I wanted to read about other people's experiences with braces mostly without having to worry about accidentally reading sponsored reviews of certain techniques, since those might not be entirely honest opinions.

I'm 25 years old and honestly haven't always had the best relationship with dentists or dental work. When I was about seven, a girl in my class 'accidentally' kicked two of my lower front teeth out. Considering the forum I'm posting on and the title of my post, I bet you can guess how they grew in ;) As a child, it didn't really bother me and I've had plenty of compliments on my smile! But one of my upper canines is kind of... up and out from where it should be, too. I also have a slight overbite. Understandably then I've always taken compliments with a grain of salt and my teeth have been a lifelong source of self-consciousness. I always smile with my teeth but it's mostly because when I try to smile with a closed mouth, I hate how my top lip looks because of the canine. I'd really like to smile with my teeth confidently one day!

When I was maybe 12 I did, uh, have a dentist recommend braces. However, he said he'd have to remove several teeth and break my jaw :yikes: I wouldn't even consider it, the idea terrified me, and while I know now that at least I'd have straight teeth if I'd done it then, I'm glad I didn't. Every dentist I've known as an adult assures me that my bite issue isn't bad enough to warrant breaking my jaw and I don't need any teeth removed thankfully. While I wish it was all over (before I've properly started!) I'm glad I didn't have teeth removed.

This post has already gotten long, but I'll continue, I suppose! I don't have any solid dates in place for any of this just yet but I did send off an email to my regular dentist, who is listed on the official site of a treatment I'm interested in. They say he's licensed to do it, so with some luck I won't need to go to someone else to fix these teeth!

Thank you for reading, if you did! I hope you're doing well and your teeth are feeling and looking wonderful.

Congrats on getting ready to take the plunge. One piece of advice as you navigate your options, please find a board certified orthodontist and at least get a consult before you decide to have a general dentist tackle your braces. Dentists are not trained as extensively as an orthodontist, especially to treat difficult cases. Wonky canines can be especially difficult.
Braces for 18 months/4 days.

Congrats as well on deciding to do it. I agree with the others, get some consults to see your best option. Not all orthos are created equal, but one may have the approach your looking for that fits your current needs. Good luck :)

Definitely look around for orthodontists in your community. While I'm sure your dentist has loads of knowledge, an orthodontist may have more specialkzed knowledge that would be beneficial to you. Good luck!
