Hello there all. A friend of mine looked at a recent photo of me and asked if I still had braces after 4 years and two months. I reluctantly told him yes, then decided that it would be good to find others out there who've had them on long.

Anyway, I'm Monica, I'm 18 and I'm a freshman at UMBC in Maryland. I'll post a few photos later in this thread.

I've had my braces since the 9th grade, and in all honesty my teeth weren't that bad. I was told I had a 100% overbite. After the wires and brackets had been placed on my top teeth, I was given a very large, very ugly hunk of plastic I needed to bite on to spread all of my top teeth apart. After 6 months to a year of that, they finally told me to stop wearing it and put on the full elastic band to pull them together. At my last visit he removed that band even though my top teeth weren't fully together, and put it regular rubber bands. Now the gaps between several top teeth are forming again.

As far as my bottom teeth are concerned, the second to front tooth on the left side is stuck behind the front tooth and just won't pull forward. They've put a spring around it to give it room 3 times now to no avail. I go back on Tuesday for another checkup, we'll see where it goes.

I guess I'm very upset about the whole experience. I was excited to get them on because it was going to be worth it in the end, but I notice so many who have them for a year and a half to two years and I feel like I got gypped in the whole situation in a weird way. Braces are all I've known through high school and now entering college.

I don't expect sympathy really. That's not what I'm here for. I'm here to connect with other people who have had their braces as long as I have or even longer and can help me to see that I'm not the only one.

Otherwise, this is a wonderful website and I'm excited to chat with all of you.

Without further ado...

A bit of an update...turns out I'm horrible at taking pictures of my teeth, they're all blurry. The best shot I can show is the gap between my canine and second tooth on the right side that's formed since my last visit to the ortho.
