Back to being a metal mouth...

#1 Post by Mokey »

I'm 19, so I feel I'm JUST qualified to post on these forums! Well, I find myself in a position I never wanted to be in... entering my 20s with braces. I'm not exactly new to the whole idea, though. Back when I was 13 I wore braces for a whole year, to correct a fairly serious overbite. That was taken care of, and I was free to live out the rest of my teens with (relatively) good looks!

Alas, a couple of years ago it all started to move back again, and I now have serious crowding on my bottom teeth. Even the dreaded overbite was starting to return, slowly but surely. I have the unfortunate combination of a small mouth and big teeth, so there's just no room for the little guys! After a lot of thought I decided to get a consultation from my old orthodontist. Although he said I didn't need any more teeth taken out (4 the first time was enough, euurrghh), I definitely needed more work. My sentence? A "mere" 9 months of braces and a whopping 3 years with a fixed retainer to look forward to after that.

Well, today I had my top brace put back. I don't remember it being so painless the first time, but it's all largely the same as I remember. The bottom brace won't be so easy...

I'm a student at uni, and I'm not exactly looking forward to going back to class tomorrow! When I tell people I've had to get braces, the first question I always get is "Why didn't you get them before?!" Argh!

Anyway, just posting to say hi, and that I'm pleasantly surprised at the number of adult metal mouths!

Chris

Hi Chris, welcome to the board.

I am 22 in University as well...so I defintely know how it feels when people ask and such. I got mine in January so I was really self-conscious about what people would think and say.

It's good that you are only "sentenced" for 9 months. That shouldn't be too bad :)
