Thanks to the members who responded to the questions I posted regarding the problems I was experiencing with just recently being braced (uppers only). If they can come up with an alternative to using metal bands the 2 years will fly by quickly for me!

I was braced last week at 34 yrs old after putting it off for so many years. I was told when I first inquired about braces that I would need extractions, and at the time I still had my wisdom teeth so that coupled with the 4 extractions needed kinda put me off. Wisdom teeth were eventually removed and I finally decided to take the plunge and get braces. My extractions were done 2 weeks ago upper & lower bicuspids.

The whole experience has been okay, not as bad as I thought it would be the only issues I am having are with the metal bands--getting used to them and a minor hiccup at the ortho office where the assistant put the wrong brackets on--I requested ceramic and she by mistake used metal. That will be corrected at my first adjustment next month. Since the Orthodontist only put brackets on 4 teeth surrounding the extraction area it is hardly noticeable, and only my upper teeth are braced so far.

I was given the usual Ortho start up kit, brushes, wax etc..but haven't had to use the wax surprisingly. I bought the Oral B Ortho brush head for my electric toothbrush--that also came with special brushes--very handy.

So far so good, although I had my doubts--looking forward to the day they come off--24 months can't fly by fast enough!

Hi Phaedra,
congrats! on getting started.

I don't have any answers to metal bands - but it's great you haven't had to use the wax yet.

I've been looking for something like that for my electric toothbrush - did you buy it online by any chance?

Thanks for the encouraging words guys! Much appreciated!

I purchased the Oral-B Braces Care Essentials Brushes kit at Personal Touch a Braun retailer here in Toronto. But I have seen the same kit on E-Bay for around $9.00 plus shipping.

Hey, welcome to the board.

I'm from Toronto as well :)

Congrats on getting your braces. I love my Oral-B electric toothbrush...it's the best. The small round head is so helpful and is so easy to use with the brackets...love it :)

Good luck with your treatment.
