I didn't get braces for YEARS because I thought having to tell people would be too embarrassing. Not the actual braces, but the fact that they would look at my teeth. The same teeth I had been trying to hide for the past 25 years!!
I actually decided to finally get braces after a girl I worked with (who was a total nightmare) said she was getting them. Sounds terrible but I thought "no way she can get them and not me!!" haha! I must thank her someday :)
Once I decided to get braces, it's like everything changed. I'd tell anyone who would listen!!
I felt better letting people know first before finding out by themself.
How to tell people

Hi,
I can totally relate to the last post. I've been thinking about getting braces for several years, but still I found it very difficult to tell my closest friends, really don't know why. When I pictured myself being in the opposite situation, a friend of mine telling me he/she wanted to get braces, I know I would be totally supportive, but for some weird reason I found it so embarassing to tell people, and actually, there was only one friend I managed to tell it face to face.
As the time for me getting braced approached, I decided to get it overwith, and sent a thread to my closest friends on facebook axplaining what I was getting done. They were all really suppertive, and I still cannot understand why I had a hard time telling.
If you don't dare saying it in person, send an sms or email to your closest. People at school/work, will just have to discover it as it happens, haven't bothered to tell them
