Yes, I'm also hoping that weight loss will be a bonus side effect of braces. Of course, I've also discovered that you can eat almost any halloween candy if you cut it up into little pieces and suck on it! And there is absolutely nothing wrong with beer. Or wine. Or a nice cold Strongbow!
I've been braced for about 8 weeks now. Although I've learned to mash up a lot of food just using my tongue, I'm still sticking to oatmeal for breakfast and yoghurt smoothies for lunch. Dinner has been interesting. I find that real meat like steak is actually easier to eat than ground meat like hamburger. And pizza is just fine if I eat it with a knife and fork. Because I popped a few brackes that haven't been replace yet, I have to grind up the food on the left side of my mouth. If I eat on the right side it will pop the wire out of the back bracket. Advil is wonderful, and so is wax.
I'm also in the "obsessive brushing and flossing" stage, followed by a lot of rinsing and mouthwash.
I wipe my mouth a lot when I talk, because saliva collects in the corners of my mouth, and I'm using gallons of lip balm--either Carmex or Burt's Bees.
Only another 18 months or so to go!

I think it's kind of the Kubler Ross stages of Adult Braces:
1. Swallowing your pride, so you can go to a practice where most of the patients are kids
2. The "What-did-I-do" stage
3. Crying
4. Learning to cope, partly by eating mushy food
5. Acceptance.
I want to skip straight to acceptance! and straight teeth....x

I think I'm somewhere between stages 4 and 5 (learning to cope, and acceptance).
My bite has been shifting so much, that I never know one day from the next what teeth I'll be able to eat with. Right now only the rear teeth on the right side touch, so I'll be eating with those. Different day, different bite...
I've heard that with a combination of oral surgery and braces, that they can halve the time you need to be in braces. Yeah... I think I'll just stick with being in braces for the usual amount of time, thank you!
