Re: Braced at 40 and having a hard time!

I'm so glad I'm not the only one! I got mine just over a week ago. I used to wear a bite splint at night and that was bad enough. It felt like an intrusion in my mouth and I couldn't wait to pull it out in the morning. The braces are a similar feeling except I can't rip these out in the morning! It's been an adjustment for sure. And maybe this is just me, but I have a hard time sneezing now. I could never sneeze with my bite splint in either, I would have to take it out first. So now I'll get the urge to sneeze and then it goes away, which is so frustrating.

I feel very conscious of the braces in my mouth and have a hard time talking. I gave myself this pep talk, told myself that no one notices but me. So I walk in a store and the cashier looks at me and says, "How long have you had your braces?" So much for thinking it was all in my head! Smiling is even weird because my lips hang up on the braces. At first I found myself not wanting to smile much. But then I realized that only looked worse. So now I just smile broadly and let the braces stick out. Might as well flash 'em, right?
