Hi All-
I am so thankful to have come across this wonderful website. I am officially getting braces on Monday (ceramic) and I am excited but nervous!!!! I just turned 26 last month and finally got some good insurance to cover a lot of the cost so I thought why not. Although my teeth are not that bad, I have some gaps I would like to close and a slight overbite. I feel completely at ease on what to expect by reading posts from this website. Although, I just dont know how I will live without real food!!!!!!
I will write back Monday afterwards, but any advice, tips, or suggestions is ALWAYS welcome. In the mean time this weekend I will try to enjoy all the foods and drinks that I will have to stop as of Monday....
Thanks!
Tia

Hey There,
Congrats on your decision to join our fam!!! I will be 26 next month, so I COMPLETELY understand where you are! I finally got insure that would cover half of my treatment about a year ago. So I spent the last year having dental work done and I took the plunge this past January! I was also concerned about not being able to eat real food, but after a month or so, you really do get used to having the braces and you can eat a lot of the food you normally ate! Fortunately, I wasn't in love with foods like tacos, or fritos, or as my ortho says, "Nothing that ends in "o"! LOL The only sad food moment I have had was last week. I went to visit the city I lived in for about 2 years. On my first night there I went to my favorite Chinese Food Restaurant. When I got home (a friend's home, rather) I sat down and thoroughly enjoyed my Chicken Egg Foo Young and braced myself for my favorite chicken wings...then I realized that chicken wings have bones in them and I can't bite down into foods that have bones in them! You don't think about the little things sometimes and that does not make for a happy dining experience! Of course my friend's husband thought it was hilarious!
I said all of that to say that you will be fine! Some of my friends ate whatever they wanted while they had their braces. Popcorn, snickers, bubble gum (with sugar) and never broke a single bracket! I'm not trying it though. I don't want to visit my ortho anymore than I have to!
Oh, rinse with warm salt water for the first couple of weeks and take a couple ibuprofen before you go to the ortho. And enjoy your last flossing experience before you go. Nobody told me that I would miss being able to do that so easily! And make sure you run your tongue across your teeth one last time before they put the brackets on...you'll miss that too!

Hi ashantia,
Welcome to the board. I agree, this board is amazing...you will get so much support. Everyone here knows how it is, the ups and downs, braces problems, etc...so it's a great community
Congratulations on getting the braces on monday. In 2 days
What exactly is your treamtment?
Don't worry about the food, expect to be somewhat on a soft diet for the first few days but with time, you will be able to eat pretty much everything you ate before.
Remember to use wax and rinse with warm salt water...it will make your mouth feel better. Also, use lip balm and drink lots of water because otherwise your mouth and lips will be dry.
Othwerise, don't stress to much...everything will be fine. You will feel some sensitivy/soreness the first few days but it will get better.
Good luck and let us know how it went on monday

Ceramic top braces: January 9th, 2006
Metal bottom braces: May 1st, 2006
Today went pretty smoothly. I think I was well prepared from all the research I did and reading these forums. My mouth does feel a strange though and I am trying to adjust to that. I ended up getting metal on the bottom and ceramic on top because my Orthodontist said due to my overbite the ceramics may be to abrasive for my teeth and wear down the top teeth. Better safe then sorry I say! So that was a little bit of a bummer but I got over it.
I thought I would be in more pain, there is a litte discomfort but no pain where I need advil or anything. Hopefully it stays that way!!!! I had to get spacers in a couple of molars so eating is weird and doesn't really feel all that great so I had oatmeal and eggs for dinner
Let the journey begin!!! I look forward to reading others' stories.
Thanks for the kind words of encouragement. I will post my pics as soon as I am able to.
