Really starting to panic....

Hey guys....

Well, its now June and i'm due to get spacers on Monday the 5th, and then ceramics on the top on the 7th. I am really starting to panic now... reading the board really helps through all the questions, but what always brings me out in a cold sweat is reading timeframes! I am lucky, my ortho say 9-12 months for the top, which trips off the tongue easily, but seeing it written down... a year... a fricking year! scares the hell out of me.

Yes, i know, most people have to wear braces for longer and I really do repect you guys for that and taking the plunge. I think getting them on is the biggest step, cos once they're on you cant take them off!! i totaly relate to DecisionMade's user name, once the decision has been made you gotta stick to it!

I was really nervous about telling people about getting braced. I havent told many people yet, probably because once i tell them i know i cant back out... but one person I did tell was my girlfiend. I'm having a bit of a long distance relationship at the moment, and only really get to see her about one or two weekends per month. When she was with me last i sat her down and plucked up the courage to say something... and i was very serious about it coz i didnt know how she'd take it. once i told her she said... "so... your big piece of news is your getting a brace!?! Is that it?!" like it was no big deal and she gave me a big hug. brilliant! :D she doesnt care one bit. Of course she said she'd take the mick at first, but because she knows its something i want to do she can accept it. we're now planning holidays together in the summer! woo yay!

has anyone had any exerience of using a dental bridge to correct teeth? Instant Orthodontics? its maybe somthing that is unspoken of here, but i have one tooth majorly out of line on the bottom, and i would be much happier if i could get it extracted and the gap filled by a bridged tooth. I spoke to my dentist about this and he said that he wouldnt do it because, although crowded , my teeth are very healthy. ortho is the only route that he would recommend but my ortho says that it would be 3 years and i might need surgery... something i'm not prepared to do. :(

sorry for having a bit of a rant, just have to get things off my chest and hear the opinions of others....

There is nothing to worry about! Like KK said, it is difficult in the beginning because it feels odd and it takes a while to get used to. Honestly, it took me about two months to start to feel natural with them where I would actually forget they were on my teeth. I have received nothing but positive comments from the people that I told and / or noticed them. I've actually noticed quite a few people out and about that have braces as well and it is usually instant friendship as soon as we notice! I am five months into my treatment and I already see a HUGE difference in my progress. The day I could smile openly and willingly in a picture or in public was a truly happy day for me!

All in all, it has been nothing but a positive experience and I really hope you do not back out. It will be worth it in the end! Especially if it is only a year! I only wish.

PS. I told MANY people before I got them just because I didn't know about this site and wanted opinions / stories / advice before going into it. Most people I knew had them as teenagers.
