nervous about first adjustment

#1 Post by mary. »

Wish me luck! I'm so not brave with these things.

I've had my braces since September but am only getting my first adjustment on Tuesday. I had a check up in November but they said my wire still had some work to do (I've had a lot of movement).
I'm so nervous, I know it's going to be a painful one. My friend highly recommended Baily's for adjusments, a good way to say be ready for some discomfort : ) I took his advice and am ready haha. I also have my favorite soup recipe ready as well.

Might as well get it over with I guess! Hopefully, it won't be quite as bad as I'm anticipating. I must say that I am very fortunate. I have an excellent orthodentist and have every confidence in him. I was in some discomfort initially, but all has gone very well since.

hey mary,

how did your tightening end up going?

was it as bad as you thought it would be?

my first tightening isn't due for just under a month, but i'm just as curious as you were as to how it feels!

Hi Brittanube

It was nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be! My teeth were quite sensitive so I had a few soup days and took some Advil, but nothing to be too worried about.

i've heard it pretty much feels like getting braces all over again.

is that an accurate description?

Hi Mary, I am actually looking forward to each adjustment. I think every time I go in I will know I am that much closer to a great smile  I am doing my best to stay positive and look at this as something I will never have to do again. The results will absolutely ROCK! (Lets see if I still feel that way after I have my first adjustment) :D

hey smileunderconstruction,

i know what you mean about adjustments. it's like 25% apprehension & 75% excitement!

i can't wait for my first adjustment (feb 14th), and i hope the ortho comments that he thinks i'm progressing well!

by the way i love your signature. hilarious!

I love that attitude, and it's so true. Each adjustment is a progress check.

And, no I did not find it like getting braces on again - it is noway near the shock to the system when the braces first go on. My first adjustment was really not a problem at all, it just took a few days to get back into normal eating and past the sensitiveness. Not a problem at all. It was actually really nice to check in with my Ortho, and make a further stride forward!

Well Mary and Nube, I think we all will get along quite well, those of us that are so positive about this can really help those that are not. This is a great thing, we need to celebrate every little step forward :-)o :-V and not dwell to hard on any set backs :-+ as they are temporary. Ok I really love this site, its fun. :D

Great to know you ladies!! :pinkbraces:

speaking of set backs!

well... i don't think it's really a set back, but hey...

i just came back from lunch, and one of my ligs popped off the bracket! it's on one of my lower right canines (the front of the tooth is facing the my fight cheek) and it's stuck under the wire so i can't get it out or put it back on!

i called the ortho, but they said just to keep an eye on it... i'm hoping this won't slow down the progress of that tooth turning around!

what do you think?

Hi mary! I'm so glad to hear the first adjustment isn't so bad. My first will be on March 24 - which will be 10 weeks after I got braced. Wish I could go in sooner. I'd like to hear that I've had some progress!

Brittanube - I'm certainly no expert because I'm pretty newly braced, but I would think that it wouldn't be a setback to have a lig pop off. Ligs are there to just hold the archwire in place. Now if the archwire pops loose from not having a lig on it that's probably a different story. How long until your next adjustment?

funshine is right - the ligs just hold the wire to the bracket tightly. without the lig, it will be easier for the wire to pop out of the bracket. just be careful when biting and chewing, and make sure to call your ortho if you feel that wire move or pop off.

take care and hang in there!

thanks funshine & bracedupgr8gurl for the advice.

funny thing happened when i got home though, my boyfriend took one look at it and offered to try and put it back on with a pair of my tweezers!

can you believe it worked! i've never been so proud of jason hehehe.

it was weird though because as soon as it was back on i could feel so much pressure on that tooth. it went away pretty fast though.

my first tightening is on feb 14th - thats 4 weeks after i got my braces on.

glad i don't have to wait as long as you funshine, but i'm sure it's for a good reason, and after ten weeks your progress report should be excellent!
