I am new, so hello all.

:) Hello all, my name is Crystal and I just turned 32. I am a stay at home mother of 2 small children. My story about braces begins back in Aug 2007 when I had to take my son to an emergency dentist appointment. We were shopping at the mall, we had stopped to let the kids play on this huge boat with a slide, its a small play ground inside the mall, great for letting them get rid of some of their energy, when he came crying. I didnt notice right away but soon it was very apparent that his front tooth was broken at the gum level. I was very upset and sad for him. I must say he was such a tough little guy, he was 3 and he was really just pushing the tooth in and out with his tongue. I tried to take him to our reg dentist, but they said they were "too busy" I was pissed at that point. So I just decided to drop in a dentists office and hope they took our insurance and that they would squeeze him in. Well much to my surprise, it turned out to be the best dental office I or my husband had ever been to. They took him in and made him a priority. My son had to have his tooth completely removed. While I was there I went ahead and made an appointment for myself to get a cleaning and I was due for x-rays all that good stuff. After the dentist looked at my x-rays he said you really need to have your wisdom teeth out, they are impacted pretty bad. So I had to make another appointment with an oral surgeon. So the date to have my wisdom teeth out was set for Oct 30th. Bummer for me since Halloween was the next day and I really enjoy that day. But anyhow I get my wisdom teeth removed, ALL 4 at once. I was in bed for 10 days for real. I cant take very many meds so I was on MS Contin which is the pill form of Morphine. I noticed about three weeks after my surgery that my teeth no longer would go together. I would spend many hours a day just trying to force them to fit, which had horrible consequences, severe pain in the whole right side of my mouth. Time goes on and I get real tired of hearing from just about everybody "oh it will get better in time" it was not getting better. My next step was I called my insurance co. to see how much they covered on braces. When I got off the phone I was in tears, they said because I was getting them at such a late age that they covered "0". I was very upset and asked why, I was told that at this age it is all cosmetic which is total crap. I can't bite down properly and I was in bad pain. So now on from there. I call an orthodontist in my area and get a consult. I also got the amt it would cost. I did not even hesitate to tell them lets just do it. The cost would be $4300 and I needed to pay a $1400 down payment due that week. They were awesome they did all my x-rays right then and did all the molds and bite down things everything but the bonding. It was a done deal, I was to get braces Jan 7 2008. So from the time I called the ortho office to when I was bonded was only 7 weeks or so. It all went so fast. That much I am so glad for, as I read so many other posts here about all the waiting and waiting. On Jan 7 I went in and I got uppers and lowers all metal, I have heard of so many people complain that the plastic brackets break easier than the metal. I didnt want any issues that were preventable plus I really dont care if others can see my braces. I was very fortunate to not need any spacers they just put all the brackets on and then, the wire. Everything was done all in 2 appointments. My smile will be under construction for at least 24 months, maybe longer. My orthodontist is a young woman who is very nice. I can see how lucky I was in getting it done so quickly. The first day I had nearly no pain, the second was a little uncomfortable, but OMG the third was the worst. Now here I am 2 weeks with my braces and I am doing so much better. I am here to meet others that are adults with braces and to have someone my own age to talk about all of this with.

Sorry about the long post others will be much shorter.
Look forward to sharing my journey!!!!!! :D

If anyone can tell me how to make a signature I would be very appreciative!!

Thank you all for your words of support. I have my moments where I think I am getting used to them then my teeth start to hurt again. Its not a bad hurt more of an ache, I just need to take some Aleeve. Oh and wax is my fav thing on earth still its like the whole world (my world anyway) is all better even if only for a little while.

4 key ingredients

#5 Post by Brittanube »

wax is great! so is bonjela (the cream they use to numb gums for teething babies) - though when my gums started numbing i had terrible de ja vu of when i had my teeth removed!

in conclusion, the 4 key ingredients for keeping your time in braces as pain free as possible are: wax, bonjela, salt rinses & nurofen!

hehehe most of this i've picked up from this forum & my friends / family who've had braces themselves!

support is wonderful, isn't it!

The supports here is great, I really enjoy that I can get support and try to offer it all at the same time, I am so thrilled to have found this site. I will be purchasing a DentaKit. I cant wait to get it. I found Cherry scented wax, I will have to get a couple of those as well. :jump: That way it changes things up a bit. I also plan to always have colored ligs, my 2 year old wants me to have pink next time, so that will be fun letting my kids be a part of my whole journey. :pinkbraces: (besides I really like pink!)

pink is awesome!

#7 Post by Brittanube »

hehehe my ligs are bright pink at the moment!

i asked everyone beforehand what they thought i should get, and agreed that bright pink was perfect to just get them noticed!

i agree with you as to how awesome this site is!

i don't think i could've gone through with braces if i hadn't have found wonderfully supportive people in the same boat as myself!

Well I broke a bracket in the worst way, my top front teeth are hitting my bottom brackets, it was quite painful, and my mouth has been very uncomfortable since. I am going in Monday to get my bracket fixed and they will prob have to add molar build ups! Not to mention that my jaw will have a slight spasm and just close real hard, thats how I broke the bracket.. :( I really hope the molar build ups stop that spasm, I plan to tell my ortho all about it. I am staying as positive as I can BUT.................. its hard. Not even sure what to think about the visit on Mon. :? we will see

Hi Smile,

I went in to the ortho last Tuesday b/c my upper cuspid kept knocking into the lower bracket and I was worried that I was going to knock off my lower bracket. My ortho decided just to do my adjustment while I was there and I ended up having my adjustment 2 weeks early. I got a new .016 rectangular niti wire and my ortho added one of my second molars into the group. My other second molar is a crown, so it's a wait and see thing. I also got a bumper on my lower cuspid as well to help with the upper cuspid knocking into the lower bracket. No much happening with the uppers, just changed the ligs on #5's, I already had wire ties from 4-4 and they were still tight.

Good luck tomorrow on your repair and hopefully you'll get an early adjustment. Just take some advil before you go in to be on the safe side.

Welcome to the group, UnderConstruction! Thanks for posting your story - funny how one thing leads to another and then *poof* you have braces :-#)

I'm 33 and had never had braces until July '07 (but always needed them). After the first few weeks, mine hardly hurt at all, and were just annoying when eating or brushing/flossing. Hopefully your braces journey proceeds smoothly and everything will stabilize soon!

Keep us posted!

Thanks to all of you, and I did get an adjustment, that way I dont have to go back on the 25th.. I could tell the wire was stronger as soon as they put the ligs around the brackets.. I did get molar build ups, but I had a choice to get them or not, and I opted for them... its for the best...plus they put a bracket on a tooth that didnt have one b4 and boy does it hurt. :soremouth: they are all a bit sore, I am taking Aleeve.

BTW all my ortho thought is was cool that this site was here she says she may check it out...... she and her assistant love the DentaKit, I had to show it off.. I just think its so cool.

I also got praised on how nice and clean I have kept my teeth and brackets!! :-} I do this all the time LOL!

So now my adjustment date has been pushed back 2 weeks, but thats fine I am just 2 weeks closer, to the end..............I am sure I will loose more than 2 weeks somewhere down the line!!

Yeah, for early adjustments!!! :D Isn't it amazing how the wire tightens up with a change of ligs, WOW!!!

I was sore for about 2 days and advil definitely did the trick!!

Feel good!

Oh I got more than just new ligs they changed my wire, I could tell right away! I am still in a good amt of pain.

As far as chewing I cant really tell just yet as my teeth are still to sore to bite I try and try but it just has not happened yet. I dont think chewing will be much of a problem. I am so hungry though. All this mush is old. I was all used to them and doing quite well. I think I will try to stick to the scheduled adjustments for a while. I am very surprised at the level of pain this adjustment is causing, must be the wire, I wish they would have only changed the ligs :soremouth: :soremouth: :soremouth:

:ouch: anyways thats all for now, I will visit again soon when I feel better.

Take care all

I have been mixing it up a little, I have found that a lunch meat sandwich is easy to eat but takes a bit of clean up. :) I am having a couple issues with the hooks on a few teeth that I didnt used to but I think its because these teeth are on the move... wax is still my best friend. No other new news. I feel like this will be a very long journey, worth it but LONG!!!
