Braces for the second time

#1 Post by damon2's »

Hi I am new to this site and I would like to post an introduction. I have already had braces once, eight years ago as a teenager. I went in with mild crowding and a class II overbite and overjet. The results were amazing and so much better than when I first started. I wore my retainers religiously, even up until the point I got braces put on for the second time. However, it was a few years later when I first saw pictures of myself from the side that I started to become very unhappy with the results of my orthodontic treatment. Before I had braces put on the first time, I told the ortho that one of my concerns was how my front top teeth inclined towards the inside of my mouth, like they were tilting back. From the front, the finished treatment looked great and perfect and straight, and it wasn't until years later when I saw pictures of my profile that I realized my front top teeth were still tilted backwards. Call me vain, picky, or a perfectionist, but my parents spent thousands of dollars on a treatment that I was not happy with. Yes my teeth were perfectly straight, and yes they looked so much better than before, but I still was not happy. I think what the ortho did was give my a good bite and also closed my overjet using the technology he had available. So, I had a good bite medically speaking, but the aesthetics of my smile were not pleasing to me.

I had another consult a few years ago to find out if there was anything that could be done. I was told jaw surgery and braces would give me the best results, but I had the option of just doing braces. The price is what stopped me. I told myself I would just have to be satisfied with my teeth, and I asked myself why I was even complaining in the first place.

Some years went by, and I still hated seeing pictures of me from the side. My mom got veneers on her top front 8 teeth, and I told myself if worse came to worse I would just do that when I had the money. I may have gone that route, but suddenly my front bottom tooth started to hit against my top upper tooth, just on one side. Then I started chipping that bottom tooth. Enough was enough, something was wrong with my bite now (even though I was still wearing my retainers at night). My mom works in a dental office and recommended that I go see the ortho their office recommends patients to. I decided that even if the price was high, now was the time to fix things the way I wanted, even if surgery would be required.

The ortho was great! He listened to my list of complaints and examined my teeth and bite. He said he knew and saw what I was talking about. He had me get x-rays and mold of my teeth and then we discussed a treatment plan. Never once was surgery mentioned. He told me that over time my bite had deepend and that it could be corrected with a new retainer, but if I wanted to truly fix my bite I would need braces for 2 more years. He also explained that when he brings my front upper teeth forward (so they don't tilt inwards anymore) my overjet will increase. He showed me a model of how they can move my top jaw/arch back slightly using mini screws called TAD's, so I will no longer have an overjet. That is the treatment plan we decided on.

I had never heard of Damon braces, but it ends up that is what they use in that office. So far I am so happy with the results I have seen with the Damons! They are so much easier to put on and adjust than regular braces. There are no metal ties or rubberbands, so no monthly tightening! I only go in every 8 weeks or so. It only takes a few minutes (seconds?) to pop one archwire out and replace it with another. And I am already very happy with my smile. It looks so much broader now! I recommend Damon braces to anyone that asks. The best part about them is teeth usually do not need to be extracted...anyways...

So now I am getting a little concerned about the mini screws and the whole moving my jaw/arch back thing. I was very excited about fixing my bite completely, but as I have been doing some research, now I'm not so sure. Maybe I would rather keep my overjet rather than end up with a flat profile...but maybe because my ortho is moving my top teeth foward I won't end up with a flat profile anyways???? I guess I should discuss this with him. Okay, I'm going to try to post some pics now. Most people don't understand why I have braces again, they think I'm crazy. I wish I could show them the x-rays!

miniscrews

#2 Post by damon2's »

I may have described what the miniscrews (TADS) are going to do to my upper teeth incorrectly...I am not sure if they are going to move my jaw back or my arch back, I don't know the correct terminology for what they are going to do. I do know that they will be used to move my upper teeth backwards. :?: :?:

Second time too

Good luck with your treatment! I'm 33 and am on my second run too. It's frustrating to have to do all this a second time.

I'm a second timer too, it's totally frustrating. I got them off the first time 25 years ago, but I have to say how much things have improved in the last 27 years. BTW, I just turned 40.

Good luck to both of you!

Thank you all for the encouragment! Yes, it is frustrating to be in braces again, but so far it has been well worth it. And the technology has improved so much over just the last couple of years!
Good luck to all of you, and I look forward to sharing this journey with you :D
