37 years old & just starting

Well, I am starting out in hopes to correct my sleep apnea & my reportedly loud snoring. A straight smile would be an added benifit, but I have already learned to live without it.
Today, a pallet expander was installed. Next month I am scheduled to have oral surgery to split open the suture on the top of my mouth.
Approximately, six months after that I should have another surgery to re-align my lower jaw.
This expander is annoying as hell. I am scared about having someone crack part of my skull open. Over all concerned if I am making the correct choice.
