New to the Site, New to Braces

I have been checking out this site ever since I found out that I was going to need braces (December 17th 08) on both my uppers and lowers. I have to say, this site has a wealth of information that has made me feel quite comfortable with the fact that I am getting braces. So, that being said, here is a little more about me...

I am a 24 year old male living in Orange County California and working in the Accounting world. I have wanted braces ever since I attended elementary school, mainly because all of my friends were getting them :D. When I was about 9 or 10 years old, I went to the orthodontist for the first time, only to find out that all of my gaps and misaligned teeth would correct themselves as I got older. I am not sure if he was just telling me this because my parents really didn't have the money and he was trying to get the idea of having braces out of my head, or because my teeth would really correct themselves. Well, they didn't correct themselves. All four of my Wisdom teeth came in rather straight and my dentist told me that there would be no reason to take them out because I have plenty of room in my jaw. Well, the Wisdom teeth started to push my teeth around a little bit, causing minor crowding on my lowers, and a slight inversion on my uppers (I am not sure of the terminology so bare with me). Now here I am, 24 years old, with my own career and the means to make frivolous/necessary financial decisions. I decided that I want that perfect smile, well, as perfect as my teeth and mouth will allow. So I went into the Orthodontist to inquire about Invisalign and to see what my options were. He told me that Invisalign would not get the results that I want and that I will need Braces on my uppers and lowers for 24 months. Well, that was a bit of a shocker, but the shock was relieved when he told me that I would not be needing extractions and that I could keep my Wisdom teeth, even after the braces are done.

I am getting Damon 3's (the half clear, half metal brackets) on my uppers and Damon 3MX's on my lowers. I am not sure if those are the same, but I guess I will find out. I get my uppers put on February 2nd and my lowers put on two weeks later. I hope to share my progress with everyone on the "Our Stories" forum and I hope to share pictures as well.

QUESTION: Has anyone had braces with all 4 Wisdom teeth completely in? Without having to get them extracted after treatment??

hi, im kinda new to this sight too. anyway when i went to the ortho i had all 4 of my wisdom teeth, and was told i could go through ortho with no problem and also keep them after i finished. well so long as i wore my retainer. i recently had my bottom wisdom teeth removed because my bottom left one was really botherng me. to much pain! anway i still have my top and they have told me that they shouldnt be a problem before, during or after treatment. so i hope thats the case for you. it kinda sucks getting them pulled, not to bad though. well i hope things so well on the feb. 2nd. im actually getting mine the next day so hopefully goes well for us both!

Hi dissonance! Thanks for the welcome! I look forward to sharing my story.

Rachael,

Thanks for the information. I wouldn't look forward to getting my Wisdom teeth out either, so hopefully mine don't start to bother me like yours did. So I guess from here on out I should be looking forward to the big B-day on Feb. 2nd, and for you on the 3rd. My Ortho asked me if I wanted to get braced on a different date because that is when everyone comes into the office to get braced. I kindly declined...I would feel a little embarrassed getting braced with a bunch of 13 year olds while their parents watch me get mine put on...
