I am a perfectly sane mother of two boys, happily married and a school teacher who had braces for the first time as a teenager. Over the years, my teeth seem to have moved back to the way they were pre-braces and i started to get a little conscious of my "fangy" appearance and arrow shaped front teeth.
I am almost 39 so feel a bit silly getting fixed ceramics at my age so i just want some reassurance that i will not be totally ridiculed by my pupils etc.!
The ortho said it would take approx 2 years so its a major commitment...i call it maintenance (also thinking of botox in the not too distant future...a mid life crisis perhaps??!!) My husband is great and loves me just the way i am and doesn't think my teeth are too bad. I think he secretly thinks i am being vain (its costing me £2800 all in as well which is pricey as well)
Anyway, this site seems to be populated by the USA market and i hope to find some more UK oldies to share stories with. I need reassurance that i am not barking mad or too old to be commiting to 2 years of braces!

Not barking mad at all - I just got braced up yesterday. It's not great at the moment (at work, painful, cannot chew food, hungry etc). But I'm confident that with support from friends and from this site I'll get through my 2 years. All the best.

Thatnks for the reply. I am going to have my braces put on on the 7th September and the new term starts the very next day....so i am going to have a classroom of 4-5 year olds wondering why their teacher cannot speak properly or eat anything!!! Oh well...its now or never!

Little kids seem fascinated by my braces. A friend's daughter who is almost 3 said I have a "necklace on my teeth", LOL. I think the little ones will be curious and excited about them (and completely accepting of them as well).

Best wishes for your treatment and for the new term. Two years will come and go, so better to have straight teeth at the end than to still have crooked ones.

I would think you'll be fine with the little kids, I doubt they will say anything but positive comments.

I work with older kids and there can be some silly comments, but dont let that deter you from doing something positive for yourself.

Have fun with the whole experience

My six year old told me she didn't want me to get braces, and she seemed so serious! Then I came home yesterday with my new braces and she simply said I "Look Silly" and gave me a hug.

How are you finding your braces? I am a teacher too (from Scotland) and I have 6 month smile braces which are ceramic with a white wire. I'm doing supply work and so far I have had to teach nursery, P2/3 and P7. I havent had any of the children comment on my braces- i'm not even sure if they notice them! I'm a bit paranoid about meeting new people with them on because I am convinced they are looking at them but it might all be in my head! Either way I can see my teeth moving so hopefully in a few months i'll be able to smile without worrying
