New to braces!

#1 Post by HeatherD »

My name is Heather. I am 34 years old and after many years of wanting to get braces, I did it. I had them put on today. The main reason that I did it was because my midline was WAY off due to missing permanent teeth. I have slight crowding on the bottom. I am looking at 18-24 months. I have not had any pain so far. So rubbing on my lips and gums. I am putting wax on that. My main complaint is the bands on the bottom. Will I ever get used to the rubbing of my tongue. Makes it hard to talk and eat!

I just wanted to say hi Heather because you and I got the braces on the same day. I'm 37 and have wanted braces forever due to overcrowding on the bottom and a slight split on the top.

I'm struggling with the spacers in between my back teeth. And wax has definitely been my best friend for the past 2 days.

I'm questioning my sanity having these done!

Best wishes!

I am pleasantly surprised that today, only day 4, that I am adjusting quite well. My biggest complaint is that I am getting poked by a wire in the back. I have to wait for Tuesday to call and go in to get it trimmed. My tongue is pretty much used to the cleats on the inside. My lips in front are a bit irritated but it is tolerable. I am just waiting for the pain. Everyone keeps saying how awful it was. I haven't been that uncomfortable. Knock on wood!!

How are you feeling today Heather? It's getting a lot better for me except I'm still having a hard time eating much of anything because of my spacers. I've been living on soup and mashed potatoes -- although tonight I went wild and did mac and cheese with peas!! LOL

But honestly people have told me that the spacers are the worst part. So if I can get past this, the rest should be a breeze!

Take care!

I am doing so much better. I am still living on soft, soupy foods too!! I tried spaghetti today. Mental note, cut it into small pieces. I had trouble swallowing the long ones even though they were soft.

I am used to the cleats on the insides of my mouth. My lips are a little irritated in the front on top and bottom but I know that it is just time before they get callused and it won't bother me anymore. It is the weirdest sensation because I can actually feel where some of my teeth are loose. I can feel them shift around sometimes when I am talking or eating. Very strange.

I have to say that spacers were a lot worse than this. I had mine in for two week before I got my braces on. It felt like my jaw was going to fall out. I had so much trouble eating the entire time. I do not miss them one bit!!

Thanks for asking!!

When does this get easier? I'm not sure that I can handle this for the next 2 years. Oh my gosh what was I thinking?!

You can do it!! I had a moment last night where I wanted to cry. We went to dinner and I just picked at my food. I could not eat it. I was hungry and grumpy! My teeth have been sore and chewing has been very uncomfortable. But better day today and that makes it easier. Hang in there!!

I've had my braces for just over 5 weeks now and I honestly forget they are there! Eating can sometimes be a pain, especially if I want to bit into something like a sandwich, but its not impossible either. I had them adjusted the other day and it didnt hurt anywhere near as much as when I got them on. There was a dull ache in my mouth the next day but nothing bad. Keep your chin up- it will get better!
