Braced Yesterday

#1 Post by LASBrace »

Hello I was braced yesterday, I have clear self ligating brackets.

So far not too bad with pain, a few teeth are sore.

I am 35, I had braces prior when I was in middle school.

I am doing ok, I think the braces make all my problems look worse, mainly the overbite. I couldn't bite down so he made two back teeth longer, which all feels very weird. I feel like I am operating my mouth remotely as each bite feels like something bad might happen.

It's weird having them on my teeth made me wish I had done this years ago so I would have them off;)

OH well, I am taking this as opportunity to get in shape, loose some wait and have my teeth fixed. So hopefully in 12-15 months I will be proud of myself as a whole.

I have been joking about them at work, but that's what I do. And everyone has been nice. Well my boss said I look like Darla from Finding Nemo, but he was joking. His wife had adult braces so I am sure it's all in good fun. Good news is my insurance pays 1/2 up to 1500.00 so that's good. The rest I have on my HSA.

So anyway my ortho gave me a new sonic care tooth brush as part of my package. So now I have one upstairs and one downstairs. Seems very posh to have two electric tooth brushes. I am thinking about investing in a water Pik.

Oh well - Day 2/400 (approx)

Good luck to everyone, its been great hearing about everyone else's stories.

Hi LASBrace,

Congratulations and welcome aboard. As you can see from my ticker I've only had mine 16 days. I also had braces in middle school and am a second timer.

I'm wearing metal self-ligating and my experience as a whole has been very similar to yours. Nothing really painful, just a little soreness at this point. This board really is great, isn't it?

Welcome, LASBrace! :-1

Glad to hear you're not having much pain, and I love the phrase "operating my mouth remotely".... that describes how I'm feeling, to a tee! I just got my braces on Tuesday (1/12), so things are still quite alien in my mouth!!

Wishing you a most successful braces adventure, and I look forward to hearing about your progress as things continue!

Welcome, LASBrace!

I also have the clear self-ligating braces - 3M to be exact. Aren't they great?

WOW, you have insurance that covers 1/2 - that's fantastic - and very lucky!

Question for you - what do you mean the OD made the teeth longer? Did they cut away some of your gums? Just curious.

And score with the Sonicare!

Hello and Welcome!

I really like this sentence "I am taking this as opportunity to get in shape, loose some wait and have my teeth fixed. So hopefully in 12-15 months I will be proud of myself as a whole."

I couldn't agree with you more! I have had my braces for almost 4 months and it is the best thing I have done and has only improved my life!
I have lost weight, I am much happier and I wish I had done it sooner.

Keep us posted!

Hi LASBrace :D

Welcome & congrats on taking the leap! It can be a major decision as an adult. I'm about to take that leap again for the 2nd time. By all accounts (including my own previous), your 1st week is going to be a little rough, then after that, your mouth begins to get used to the new hardware, as well as the feeling of pressure on your teeth. Eating may continue to challenge yo, though.

Since I'll be getting braced on Jan 22nd, we'll be on a parallel course. I've been visiting this site for a while now. It's so great! 8) I just wanted to stop in - say hi - & wish you lots of luck.

Thanks for all the comments the board is AWESOME

frazali - He added some white stuff to bottom of two back teeth on top so my bite would hit there. Before I was hitting on the actual braces, which was no good. He said he would remove them when my came together better.

Day 5 - One of my brackets fell off but I found it and will call to get it put back on tomorrow - Monday

Hi LASBrace and everyone - it's great to meet you guys!

I got braced last Wednesday (20 January) and it was the first time ever for me. (I am 42.) I had no idea so many adults were getting this done. It's good in a way to see people having this done at the same time as me, so we are all in the same boat together. Comparing notes like this is a real help.

I have been writing a blog about the whole process: http://dentalista-bracingup.blogspot.com/

I hope you find this interesting - especially as I have a TPA as well (ewww).

I know what you mean about making your teeth longer! They call it 'blue bumps' in my case. They added some blue material to 2 of my back lower teeth so I can't close my mouth all the way otherwise I would hit my overbite front teeth on my lower brackets. This is the worst part of the treatment so far for me. It is difficult to chew things especially lettuce! I swallow a lot of food without nearly fully chewing it- just like I was told not to do all my life:) They are supposed to be in for months I believe. I understand that an alternative to this would be delaying lower arch treatment for months so I think I like this method and have adjusted to it so far. Otherwise, I didn't have the sort of pain I thought I would by getting braces- it has gone well so far for my first (and last!) time in braces.
How are you doing eating with the 'longer teeth'?
Clear uppers and lowers installed.
Treatment Time Expected: 12-18 months
