Braces on for 4 days. Now I have second thoughts.

#1 Post by meltreat »

I am 44. I was planning on using Invisalign. I made a last minute decision to go with In-ovation C because the dr said it would be 100% better. Invisalign was 90%. I thought, "WHy spend the money if it is not perfect?" I had brackets put on the top. Now I am embarrassed to open my mouth. I wish I could go back and have the brackets removed. How do I get past this embarrassment? Is it possible to reverse this decision? Has anyone ever gone back a week later and changed to Invisalign?

Ah - don't be embarrassed! I had a big panic after my braces were fitted when I realised I'd be fully train-tracked when I meet all my husbands extended family for the first time in the summer. Didn't seem like a great way to make a first impression. Then I discovered I had to be interviewed by a journalist at work and have my photo slapped across a local magazine - joy of joys...

But now I've had them for a month and you know what - other people really aren't that interested. Also, people are generally unobservant. How many times have you had your hair cut, looked in the mirror and thought 'oh my word what a disaster I can't possibly leave the house', only to go out and find no one even notices it's been cut? We tend to focus on whatever's obssessing us at the moment, which is not at all what everyone else is obsessing on. When I was pregnant, it seemed every other woman I walked past was expecting. When I first wore contact lenses I was hyper-aware of other people's glasses. Just give it a week or two more and let yourself get used to them before you rush back to the dentist.

I really thought that everyone would notice and comment on my braces... but after 2 months I can honestly say that most people really seem to not pay any attention to them. Even when I pointed them out to someone, she said "Oh, you have braces?" - she hadn't even noticed! (I have the clear ceramics).

There have been a few people that commented, usually because they had braces themselves, or there was one woman whose husband had them and she wanted to know if they were really as terrible as her husband is making them out to be lol

I am really happy I got them. I can't believe how quickly my teeth are moving. Hopefully you will begin to love yours a little more once you start seeing some results :D

Stick it out a while longer meltreat. When you see how quickly your teeth move, you might be happier with the decision. I have In-Ovation C's too. I wasn't so sure about them at first, but I love them now. :-#)

About four people noticed within the first week/said something. Of those people, all were encouraging, most were commiserating, and only one asked 'why now?' Since then, I haven't had anybody mention it unless I was like standing in a public bathroom brushing my teeth. It's just not something people care about. It feels like you have a huge banner over your head but really nobody cares. Stick it out for a bit longer and it will get better.

Oh my gosh, I totally understand...I thought "what have I done" and it seems to be a common thought....stick with it, the results will be better!!! I just talked to a 40 something and she said she did invisalin, and it just wasn't doing what they hoped, so now she is top to bottom metal....might as well just stick with it at this point, and I think you will be happier quicker with the results!!! It took me until now, about 11 days in to feel more comfortable with others....

good luck!!!
