Five hours in!

I came across this site a few months ago while doing some research on different types of braces, trying to decide which ones to go for, and have found all the information and stories really helpful. I'm 39, had braces as a kid, but since having the retainer removed in my early twenties (why oh why did I do that?!) my teeth have got steadily worse, and I am so ashamed of them now.
Well I finally took the plunge and had my braces put on earlier today. I know it will all be worth it in the end, but just now I'm wondering what the hell I've done and feeling just a little bit sorry for myself (what a chicken I am).
I'm not so bothered about the pain and discomfort, it's the reaction of everyone else I'm terrified about. I'm dreading going into work on Monday!
Anyway, I'm glad I found this site as I think it will really help.

Hi LaraS. You'll find less people will notice than you think. And those that do notice are generally just interested rather than freaked out.

The best way to combat worry about what other people will think is to smile proudly. If you act like nothing is weird, they will too.

Good luck.

Thanks sammy, I'm sure you're right.
I think this forum will be a big help - it is great to be able to read the stories of everyone else going through the same thing.

It is funny how all of us, just about, had that same thought of "what was I thinking?"...it really does get better...it took me loooooonger than most. Good luck!

Hi LaraS

How has your first few days been?? I am getting braced next week for the 2nd time too. A little bit nervous, any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Hi Ellebraced

I'm feeling so much better about it all now (11 days in). As everyone says, that first week is the worst. I'm still finding it a bit hard to eat and to talk properly, but I think that is because I have quite a bad overbite so they had to put the things on the back of my front teeth (forgotten what they are called but they are evil!) and built up my back teeth a bit - think it helps the teeth to move more freely.

My number one tip is to use a lot of wax even before it starts rubbing. I found that my teeth don't actually hurt much (they actually ached more when I had the spacers in), but my mouth and tongue got quite sore from rubbing against the metal bits.

Tip number two is to not be too hard on yourself in the first week. Expect to have a miserable few days to start, but it will very quickly get a LOT better. I found flossing really hard (and painful) to start with, but that gets easier, so don't worry if you can't floss properly to start with. Also the liquid diet drinks are really good for the first few days if you don't feel like eating anything solid. (One positive is that I've lost a couple of pounds!).

This forum is really great if you have any questions!

Cheers,
Lara

I agree this forum is great.
Its comforting to know that many of us share the same stories and feelings. Knowing that I am not alone in my thinking  has helped me make the jump and I have decided to go for it.

I am in the same boat. I have some major crowding on my lowers, and have been thinking about getting them fixed. This forum has been a great way to help me decide.
