Congratulations on the decision to get braces! ; ) I got mine 8 mths ago and am 54 yrs old so, it's never to late! Every time I go in for an adjustment I come home and have to eat soft foods for at least 24 - 48 hrs cuz my teeth feel so sore. You learn what things to eat and not eat pretty quickly! Puddings and jello are great for sore teeth. I also love mashed or sweet potatoes when mine are sore. Take care and congrats again! ; )

A lot of people like cold stuff, but I found that warm, soft food made my mouth feel a lot better when I was in that stage. I ate a LOT of soup. Also cream of wheat (oatmeal gets stuck in your braces). Grits would probably be nice too (I'm allergic to corn). A cup of tea or coffee is really nice.
Also, oddly enough, when your teeth are hurting, brush your teeth with nice warm water and do the whole tiny-circles-massaging-the-gums thing above and below your braces. I probably brushed my teeth eight or ten times a day when my braces first went on, because it really helped.
If your molars are shifting, salad is going to be almost impossible to eat, as will anything particularly chewy.
So: soft foods, nothing you have to bite, particularly if they're moving your incisors around, and booze. Booze is always ace.
One more note that I think people don't get warned about enough: you're going to start going through toothbrushes really fast. Don't try to get extra use out of them: when they start getting frayed, chuck them. If you wait too long, the braces will actually start to break the ends of the bristles off and the bristles will cut and scratch your gums as you brush. I learned that the hard way.
