Braced on 1.5.12

#1 Post by Mazly007 »

Hey everyone,

I'm Lynn from MN. 23. Just had all 4 of my first bicuspids removed the afternoon of 1.4.12. My ceramic uppers and metal lowers went on the morning of 1.5.12. Since getting the braces on, I have been in a continual state of pain...no, since getting the spacers in on 12.14.11. Please tell me it gets better because I cannot imagine 2 years of continual pressure, canker sores, and a scraped up tongue!

I've always been uncomfortable with my smile as I have a crowded mouth and my canines stick out further and are more pointed than the average person. My parents were unable to afford braces because of very general dental insurance when I was growing up. I decided that now that I have a FT job, providing me with orthodontic benefits, it would be a great time to get braces. Not to mention, that my boyfriend and I are hoping to be engaged in the next year, with a wedding to follow 2 years from now.

Any ideas on how to work with the pain and discomfort? I'm doing ibprofen and acetaminophen. Wax on my brackets. Orajel. Soft foods (pudding, apple sauce, soup, yogurt, etc). Ice packs. Nothing is helping enough...that and I have a low pain tolerance.

You should go to Dentakit.com and buy the Therapy/Bite Wafers. Those helped me when All else failed. It increases bloodflow to the teeth and makes the pain go away. Mind me asking but how is your tongue cut up when the braces arent even on that side? Mine never got cute up, but my lifes sure did get scraped you should get GUM brand wax its a bit hard to get out of the packege but I found that brand to stay on the brackets the best.

The metal band on right first molar sticks out a bit on the bottom as it wasn't completely pressed in/fitted to my tooth. So as my tongue rubs it....ouch. I've tried placing wax on the side but it tends to fall off really quick.

I was going to give it two weeks to get better...if it didn't than i was going to tell them to do something about it cuz i can't be living with this thing cutting up the side of my tongue.... Just when i had enough... I woke up and BAM..my tongue doesn't hurt no more..LOL...

Warm salt water rinses also helps soothe your mouth. Just take it one day at a time. The first week or so is usually the most painful time. It does get better and you will pretty much forget all about the braces in no time. Hope you get to feeling better! :)

Hey Maz-

Things are moving all over the place all the time...however, I recently had the molar band problem cutting in to my tongue. I put up with it for only about 1/2 day, and then went in to the ortho--they shaved it down to fit better and it's sooooo much better. They can fix those things--don't hesitate to call your ortho office and ask questions!

Hey everyone! Yes, the braces are starting to feel better. I decided on Sunday that I needed to man up and stop using wax so that my mouth could get used to the extra bulk inside. So far so good, just a few sores.

Yesterday I ended up visiting my orthodontist because I was already missing a clear ligature on one of front teeth. They replaced the ligature and said that my wire needed to be trimmed already. Yay for movement!
