Hello, new here!

#1 Post by sharicat »

Hello all :-1 I'm on day 4 of 6 month smiles and in some pain! Joined up here to chat to others about their braces experience and gather some hint and tips on living with braces. I've had braces twice in my teens, first for overcrowding so had headgear and bone braces, then a removable one. The results were not perfect and only the top was treated, despite my bottom row being crooked. And they have gone squint again in the last few years :(

So at 33 I've decided to pay to have the best possible smile I can. I also have a front dental implant due to an accident in childhood, and the way my teeth had went squint really highlights it and I feel so self-conscious. Plus the colour is not right so my dentist is replacing it once the braces are off.

I'm really excited to have finally taken the plunge! My face is so sore, but I know it will be worth it.

Hi Sharicat, are you planning on making a braces story to document your progress! Ive had my braces on a few hours now and the dull ache is gradually setting in!

thanks everyone :) I am so excited to see what my teeth look like when they finally come off! I am gradually learning to eat with them and getting into a cleaning routine. Dental wax is my saviour, and iglu mouth ulcer treatment. It also helps if I don't talk too much!

I've gt Anbesol gel and that's my new favorite thing! As well as Weetabix!

Are you brushing after every meal?

Yes. I am still trying to establish a routine that works well as I am finding eating and cleaning very time-consuming! I am not snacking, just having 3 meals a day and brushing afterwards then re-waxing and applying ulcer gel and taking ibruprofen. The best thing for reducing pain though is not talking. Effective but not super practical!

You are so right about the not talking!

I've been a bit lax about brushing after eating so think I better make sure I get in the habit.

I am the same. Once I've got the wax on and got some relief the last thing I want to do is brush it all off again! I am getting better at keeping food off my braces when eating, although I am having to eat soft food so I can chew less to do this. I am also using toothpicks to get bits out then rinsing with mouthwash.

I haven't had too much of a problem with food getting stuck but then I've only really eaten soup, mashed potato and soggy toast!

The things we do to ourselves!!

Hi, I'm currently on day 4 of my 6MS too! How painful were yours at that time? I'm in a LOT of pain right now. Jaw ache, sensitive teeth and ulcers. Cant eat, sleep or talk without pain. In fact, can't do anything to stop the pain, even for a minute. Did you feel like this too? thanks

allymac mine were still pretty bad after 4 days. I'd say about a week or so the pain had reduced and my ulcers and scrapes started healing up. I'm over 3 weeks now and still get a bit of pain and rubbing if I talk too much but nothing like the horrendousness of the first few days!

Thank you, that's reassuring :) I suppose I've just got to put up with it for a few more days and hopefully it'll get easier... Just frustrated at the moment I suppose. But hopefully it'll all be worth it in the end for us both!
