Hello all! I turn 40 this December and I'm getting braces for the first time. The majority of my teeth are fairly straight, but I do have an anterior and a posterior crossbite, plus some minor rotation in my front bottom teeth. I'm getting the braces to correct my bite, which will hopefully help with the TMJ issues I'm having. I'll be getting the SPEED braces, after deciding that Invisalign just wouldn't work with my lifestyle.
My install appointment date is August 19th and I'm getting rather nervous about it! But I'm also excited about doing something that may help my TMJ discomfort.
Anyhow, I just wanted to say hello and introduce myself. I've been reading the boards here like crazy for the past week and have found SO much useful information!
Hi! Congrats on deciding to get braces! I promise it'll be so worth it and fly by. Don't be surprised if people don't immediately notice that you have braces. I had to tell everyone! Go figure. The boards here are really cool. It's nice to ask questions and have people root for your journey and see progress pics of others. Good luck! Post pics!
Goodluck!!! It's daunting but also really exciting. I'm 45 soon and have been braced for 6 months...yeah sometimes they are a pain but sometimes I completely forget that I have them. Although I don't have TMJ I was driven to seek treatment for ongoing dental pain...that drove me mad. I was living on panadol. I was referred to a maxillio facial surgeon...many tests later...no cause was.found. since having braces I've not had the pain...totally bizarre...I'm hoping I won't néed the jaw surgery.
Welcome to the club! I got braces two months before my 40th birthday. I was really nervous about what other people would think, but it hasn't been a big deal. Now I'm really happy with my progress and sometimes I think the braces even look good on me- they definitely make me look younger
Braces installed on March 25, 2014: Damon clears on top and metal on bottom. I had braces for 25 months!
Hey, welcome to club 1974! A great year...when we were both born! I turned 40 myself in February, so believe me, you're not alone getting braces at 40. I just got mine on 3 weeks ago. My initial fear was what other people would think in a professional environment, but since I only have my bottoms on now (will be getting upper in December), and they are ceramic, nobody ever notices them. And even when I mention them, people have to do a doubletake to see them. And then they really don't care. I think the biggest surprise for me was I always thought people would make comments or ask me if I am insane. But they really don't care - it seems to be like if someone was wearing glasses. It's becoming totally normal in today's society.
Anyways, good luck and just remember that all the pain and aggravation will be worth the end result.
Thanks for all the warm welcomes! I'm getting more excited, and less anxious, about getting the ball rolling. I'll be sure to post some pics of my teeth before and then after they get put on and I'll be using the "braces stories" forum for updates on my journey.
