Getting Braces in College Update

#1 Post by Len »

Okay so I've been through my spacers phase, it was so bad I don't even want to remember that. It was like 7 days of smoothies, applesauce and soup, one of the Spacers broke so I needed to go there three days before I put the bolar bands. Last monday I put the molar bands on and they hurt my cheek but at least I can eat with no problems. I'm getting my braces in 2 days and I need my Orthodontist to fix my left molar band because I can feel it when I chew and it's getting on my nerves but I guess it'll be OK. I suffer from anxiety, which is triggered by new stuff and as the day I get my braces gets closer, my anxiety gets bigger and bigger and I keep on watching videos on youtube to try to get every piece of info I can but It doesn't seem to calm me down. I can't focus on anything else specially because I'm on holidays this week and even when I do chores, I can't help but freak out. (do any of you have that problem?)
One of the things that dramatically changed in my life was the fact that I always need to rinse my mouth with water several times after I eat if I can't brush my teeth immediatelly. I'm still not really aware on what colors I'm gonna pick first, I was thinking something related to spring time.
So what I bought for my next journey is: New toothbrush (mine was a bit wasted already and got worse after getting the molar bands), proxy brushes of a few different sizes (It wasn't my decision about the different sizes, it just happened that my local grocery store only had those but I believe they're more in handy because the spaces between the brackets aren't all the same and there's one I can use as a floss actually.) Unfortunatelly, my local grocery store didn't have just one travel size brush so I grabbed a travel kit which has a travel size brush, a travel size tube of paste, some floss and elixir, it also comes in a small bag which is perfect for college.
Ok so that's pretty much It for now. Bye

Wow you're ready!

I get nervous too, I brought some music to listen to ... a zen/spa mix. I found I did not need it for the braces, but did for the extraction. You'll be fine.

I have anxiety issues about new things too, even if I'm excited about them. But it's weird, I have a physical response to the anxiety, not mental. So my heart will race, sometimes I have short palpitations. It's nuts. So far I can usually just push through since my brain isn't telling me to panic. My appointment is Monday so I've been having a lot of days of racing heart episodes. I'm ready, I have travel brush, floss picks made for braces, stash of soup and pudding, hopefully I haven't forgotten anything.

So yeah, you're not alone in your anxiety.

Oh, I haven't decided on band colors yet either. I'm going for ceramic brackets top and bottom, just like my 10 year old has right now, but I'm thinking of clear bands to keep things even more invisible. Kid wants to match with me, so we shall see what I end up with.

I'm a sophomore in college and have braces! At first I thought it would be so embarrassing but its not at all. Half the time I forget I even have braces and no one ever comments on them. I've also come to realize how many yound adults/adults have braces! Its not bad at all. In my opinion, spacers are by far the worst part. I was in so much pain with spacers but have hardly experienced much pain at all with braces. Especially getting them on is not bad at all! I definitely understand the anxiety though- it was sooo nervous too but after getting them on I thought wow, that was easy! You'll do fine, good luck!

Yeahhh you're ready. Try not to drink coffee, you'll feel less anxious physically like that. I got mine today.. It's funny how they make me look more attractive lol It's nuts. I bought some ice cream, too. My orthodontist told me to eat it to relieve the pain a little. So far I'm kinda good so I'll save it XD
One thing I didn't do but you should ALWAYS ASK FOR WAX. It will be the love of your life for a week (lol) OH and by the way for the color I picked light pink even though I'm not that found of it mostly because it's the color that suits my face the most and I'm not regretting it at all.

Aw thank you! It all went well. I've been there only for 30 minutes, it was soooo fast.

Thanks for the pep talk, Len! I'm not a coffee drinker, so I don't have that worry. I'm surprisingly calm tonight, trying to keep my mind off my appointment tomorrow. The good thing is I already know our orthodontist very well, after treating three of my kids he's like family.

Didn't hurt much getting them on, but I had enough pain for a few days to stay dosed with Ibuprofen round the clock. Things slowly got bett and by the end of week 2 I was just dealing with random lip soreness.
Braces for 18 months/4 days.
