Hey all just want to introduce myself, I'm 20 currently studying in University and last year I decided to get braces from the advice of my dentist, friends and family. This February after months and months of waiting (NHS waiting list ofc ) I said I would like to proceed with my orthognathic treatment which would mean having braces and finally require operation to my 'Skeletal III base' underbite to realign my bottom and top jaw, plus a lifetime of wearing retainers . All of this will be done in a 3-4 years process for an average person. My orthodontist said they will aim to keep my treatment time as short as possible as I have short roots which means a higher chance of root resorption and the loss of my precious teeth. Sounds daunting doesn't it?
Its now been 3-4 weeks since I've had my braces on (went for plain silver ligs) and for the first initial week I generally had no discomfort or pain, just the occasional odd poking from the clipped wire ends but my cheeks have gotten used to it. I do however, have pain when eating, and I still do. My front teeth can barely bite into a cucumber or a sandwich without pain shocking up to my gums so I really do recommend for the first few weeks for newbies to eat a lot more softer foods, liquefied food or if the temptation is still there for crunchy and hard food; cut the food in small pieces and chew with the back teeth's which are a lot denser and stronger (if your wisdom tooth's are still intact that's a bonus!)
Also another persistent problem for any new braces users reading this is food getting stuck in your braces. It is an absolute hell, especially stringy vegetables or doughy bread it will be a pain in the back side. Therefore I wholeheartedly recommend you all to invest in a 'Waterpik', before I had braces flossing is really long and tedious so I got myself a water flosser. Now its the best tool to use when cleaning your teeth and braces from yucky food remnants and plaque stuck on your braces and anything in between them. Pricey but really worth it
Anyway's that my introduction and some little advice I would like to give to any people about to start the journey on the tracks ( ). I hope to get to know a few of the new and old members on this informative and excellent forum. Thanks for reading !

Hello there! Thanks for posting here. We were almost on the same week when I got "braced". It's my third week today, and same as your experience, the first week was not a hell, just the wires and the drooling though.
God bless to all of us wearing braces! (i'm 23 here!)

Welcome to the forum and good luck with your treatment! Yes, it does sound daunting, but you seem prepared for your challenge and age is definitely on your side! Thanks for the advice. A Waterpik sounds an excellent idea. However, I have very sensitive teeth, a relic from over zealous brushing when I was younger, apoarently, and so I wondered if it jets cold water or can you adjust the temperature? Best of luck.

welcome to the braced gang!!
I got my braces on around 2 and a half years ago, so I'm a bit of an oldie!! I would say that the first few weeks do hurt when biting into food however it is best to be tough with ur teeth, dont feel scared when having a hard piece of food as it will toughen up how to deal with tightenings and new appliances.
I have had a canine exposure, 8 TADs (mini screws in my gum), frenectomy, wire going across my palate, power chains, springs and currently have to wear 6 different elastics. I know how painful orthodontic procedures can be!!
I understand that ur going to be having surgery and good luck with that. I may also be heading down that root soon if my bite does not improve or may have to wear headgear to get a mara or herbst appliance but not too sure. I have been told that the recovery after is surgery is the most daunting bit and I wish u the best of luck.
We can get through this together!! Post anything that seems to bother u or if u have any queries and either I or another user will be sure to answer it!!

With the waterpik its recommended to fill its reservoir with warm water so you don't get that cold shock from sensitive teeth, you can also adjust the speed of water that jets out of the waterpik to your liking so it doesn't do any damage to your teeth and braces

Hi Kazinka!
I am in a similar situation - have braces on but trying to keep treatment gentle and short because of short roots. I just wanted to see how yours is going? Are you finished and did you have any further root damage?
Thanks!
