Clear brackets versus metal

#1 Post by loridee76 »

Newbie here,

So I am trying to decide if I want clear brackets or metal. My son had clear and I guess a negative with clear is possible staining with certain foods.

Any pros and cons I should consider with my decision.

Thanks in advance!

Hi- I had ice clear ceramic- I found them extremely bulky- every time I smiled my top lip would get caught and I had to force it down over the braces. I also felt like they were all yellow so I took them off. I am now getting metal top and bottom.

I have Damon clear middle uppers and metal bottoms. No problems with the clear so far. Not too bulky and no lip issues, but I don't have an overbite. I researched and they are not supposed to stain but I also don't drink coffee anymore just to be safe. So far very happy with my choice, no one can really tell I have braces unless they are pretty close to me or see the bottoms. Hearing the Ice clear stains yellow is a bit scary, hopefully the Damons stay white.

I have ceramic uppers and bottoms. My ortho said it is not the brackets themselves that stain, it's the ligatures that hold the wire in place. So far, I haven't noticed very much discoloration, and I drink a lot of coffee and red wine - I do spend a lot of time brushing and such though. I do find them bulky, but I'm getting used to them (it's been almost 4 weeks for me).

This is good to know about the brackets not staining. I misunderstood when my kid had them. He clarified that it was the rubberbands that hold the wire on bracket that would stain. He said he always had them put in clear for added descreet look. Lol
So this is good news!
Thanks for replies on the staining. :D

When I first had my brackets on; I was very concerned about my public appearance. I did get ceramic uppers. I cared what other folks would think or how they would react... After about a month I realized no one really cared about my teeth or if I had braces.

The ceramics are more discrete, but the wires will show, any elastics will, some other odds and ends to help move teeth will... They're not as invisible as I thought they would be.

If I had it to do all over again, I'd save the $400 and just go with metal uppers.
Round 3 (lifetime) Damon stainless applied 3/16/20 (after 4 weeks attempting invisalign) On for about 18 months
Night time elastics with invisalign retainers; still...
Double jaw surgery was 6/18/15...
Orthodontics never really ends...
I'm emphatically against extraction orthodontics!

I have all metal. I considered doing ceramic, but I am kinda glad I didn't. They are braces, they are on my teeth and I'm not hiding them is the stance I chose to take

I also get colored bands, like the kids do.

I am 37. LOL

I have white ceramic, the bands that hold them in do stain after a while but the ceramic doesn't.

My ortho doesn't charge any different for ceramic so both my son and I got them upper and lower. Yes, the wire still shows, but it's not as much metal hanging out in your mouth. Even with silver wire and colored ties people hardly notice.
Braces for 18 months/4 days.

I am not trying to hide my braces after I get them.

Actually I think my colored bands will show up better with the clear brackets. I am excited about getting braces. And will wear them proudly as they straighten my teeth.

My date for brackets on upper teeth is June 7th. Now to decide on the first color of bands I want.

Thanks for all who replied.
