Afraid I'll become an adult with braces...

#1 Post by 2018 »

Hello folks,

I realize that this is a forum for adults with braces, but I decided to join because it won't be long before I legally become an adult. My biggest fear in regards to braces is that I'll still have them when I'm 18. It wouldn't be the end of the world but the last thing I want to be is bracefaced for my graduation photos. I'm hoping to get them off this summer (when I hit the 1 1/2 year mark) but I'm not optimistic. :?

Hey. I got my braces this March and will graduate in June. You're lucky your smile is straight (even when wearing braces) by the time you graduate. I wouldn't worry about smiling, you don't have to show your teeth if you are not comfortable.

While I do understand being self conscious....smile away and smile big! You are taking care of yourself, and hopefully won't need braces when you are 29 (like me), so try to be proud! When you get older, you'll look back on those photos fondly, then smile big in a mirror as you realize how far you've come.

You could also try to put wax over your brackets to cover up the braces a bit. Ask for lighter colors for ligatures so the wax masks the color. I fiddled around with the wax and noticed it masked the brackets a bit. Since some senior photos are taken from a distance, it may help!

Whatever you choose, congrats on graduating and good luck!

Adult with braces? Who cares really? I had my first go around with braces at age 29. Now here I am about to turn 39 and in 4 days another round of braces for me. No big deal :) Embrace it and flash it around and just go for it. Don't worry about what anyone thinks. In the grand scheme of things the people that care or give you a hard time or really judge you poorly because you have braces are the people I don't want to associate with anyone. 99% of folks will just say.. Cool, or will ask you a million questions about them as they are curious. The few that are the opposite well, tell them to go jump in a lake (or whatever other words you choose to say to them)

The truth is: no one cares. Really.

It's not like how it was 20+ years ago in terms of the types of braces available, treatment options, and the general number of adults walking around with braces on.
In fact, most people say supportive things if anything at all.

Congrats on almost being done!
