Dad & Daugther doing this together

#1 Post by Dadio »

I've been learning a lot here, so here's a go at an intro. My daughter (11) and I (45) got braced on 10/6; I went in on 9/26 and she on 9/29 for records & spacers (more on that in another post about spacers). We were both braced on the same day. I got to watch part of hers and she got to watch all of mine. We're both braced on top, but have bands in place on the bottom for braces there in the future. She was the reason we started this whole adventure, I took her in for a consultation after a dental checkup with some strangeness with her permanent canines coming in/around/on top of her baby ones. Perfect time for her, and I've need bite correction for - gasp - decades. She went with bright blue and yellow ligs. I countered the suggestion for smoke or tooth and walked out with copper ones.

I was so happy to be able to move up from smoothies with spacers to things like pot pie, meatloaf, and shepherds pie by the weekend after braces! For some odd reason, my wife had to be out of town for 'spacers weekend' and 'braces weekend'. Hmmm, I do wonder. And for jumping back into things with friends, I was committed to dj/kj (karaoke) a party for my friend's wife's 50th birthday party and no way I could back out of that. So, on with the show. I just didn't talk a lot!

And if you wonder, Dadio is for Dad and Daughter In Ortho.

Best to all.

Nickl, hope all goes well for both of you!

For those who like to know that nitty gritty details, we've gotten the official orthodontist to dentist letters, so we know (well, we have the facts, not that we really know what all of this is!) what's what.

Dad's condition:
Class II div I malocclusion
Very mild class II relationship between maxilla & mandible
Overbite severe; a bit of palatal impingement of mandible incisors on palatal tissue
Moderate to severe degree of overjet
Mild spacing in maxillary arch; moderate crowding in mandibular arch

Dad's treatment:
Full upper & lower fixed braces
Non-extraction
Class II elastics
Estimated 20 months
Maxillary Hawley retainer and mandibular spring retainers

Daughter's condition:
Class III malocclusion
Mild Class III skeletal relationship between maxilla & mandible
Decidous maxillary right and left canins are over-retained
Overbite severe
Moderate crowding in both arches
Posterior open bite, right side, canine and premolar area
Maxillary dental midline shifted 3mm to right of facial midline

Daughter's treatment:
Full upper & lower fixed braces
Non-extraction of permanent teeth
Vertical elastics to close posterior open bit
Estimated 20 months
Maxillary Hawley retainer and mandibular spring retainers
