Newbie from UK

#1 Post by Aurelia »

Hi everybody, Well firstly I gotta say how helpful this site has been to me. Well done to Lyn for starting it and thanks to everyone who has posted on here, its so comforting to know that you are not alone.

I'm aged 32 and live in the UK. As a child I was supposed to have a brace to close the gap between my front teeth but my Mum says I threw a paddy and wouldnt have one! Now all these years later I am paying the price for it!! I visited my dentist to discuss having cosmetic work (Smile Design) but after taking impressions and xrays he told me the other day that I cant go straight ahead with that. I have a canine tooth that needs to be pushed to the front and made straight, he says that wearing the brace for 9 months to 1 year will do this and also straighten all my other teeth out and close the gap at the front. This is something I have so wanted since I can remember but I am so nervous about it as well. When I got home from the Dentist I must admit I cried, but my partner and family are being very supportive and are telling me to do it because it will make me the happiest person in the world and I'll never be conscious about my teeth and smile again. I sure hope so I am determined to go through with it and I'm going to keep reading on this site to keep my spirits up.

Thanks all.

:D

Well done on taking that first step!

There's a few of us from the UK on here. Are you NHS or private? I'm private because the NHS waiting list was horrendously long!

You will definitely get all the help you need on here, it's a very friendly, supportive place, you'll be glad you joined :D

Hi there, thanks for your reply. My Dentist/Orthodontist is private and the cost of my brace and treatment for one year he said would be approx £2,000!! I nearly fell out of the chair! Mind you, if I had been able to have cosmetic treatment that would have set me back about £5,000.

Thanks for your kind comments, I am really glad I found this site, it has really helped me to be brave and go ahead and just get it done!

Mine's £2500 and then another £7000 for my surgery so I definitely feel your pain!

Will you go for the cosmetic stuff as well after you get your braces off or will you not need it after having the braces? I'm going to have my teeth whitened after all is done in time for my wedding, is that the kind of thing you mean?

Gosh it is a lot of money isnt it but its going to last us the rest of our lives so well worth it.

Well, I have already got 2 porcelain veneers over my 2 front teeth, I had them done about 12 years ago coz I used to bite my nails a lot and my teeth were uneven, they look ok but my Dentist reckons they are too large, he says once the brace work is finished he would then like to put about 8 veneers on the front. I'd love to have this but at £5,000 I'm going to have to wait a while. I need to check with him that when my brace is off my teeth will look fine. He also said I need to have laser surgery on my gum  I'm just waiting for my treatment plan to come through the post and then I'm going to get the brace done early next year.

Thats great you are having your teeth whitened for your wedding, I've never had that done but people I know have it and it looks great. You seem to be having a lot of work done yourself looking at your signature, your very brave :D

It is a lot of work but I have seriously messed up jaws! I keep saying that I'm going to post my pics sometime soon but I'm going to wait till I get my expander next week and will do it then.

I know what you mean about the cost, we'll have to borrow it and probably couldn't justify it just yet if it was purely cosmetic, but I suffer from so much pain that we decided to just go for it. Is it possible for you to get your work done on a treatment plan? I don't really know how it all works but sometimes there are ways to avoid having to pay a lump sum I think.

Good luck and let us know when you get your treatment plan!

Ok lets make a deal - you post up your pics when you get your expander and I'll post my pics up in January.

Yes you are having a lot done, crikey, well done to you for taking the plunge and getting it done. You are going to look and feel so fab on your wedding day:D

Yes luckily my Ortho offers a treatment plan with interest free finance, he said I have to pay a third of it upfront and the rest can go over monthly payments so in all it will take me about 2 years to get it paid!

Can I ask a question, what is an expander for? I keep seeing it mentioned on here and have seen some pics, my Ortho hasnt mentioned this to me but I'd like to know what it is.

Thanks.

I got my treatment plan thismorning!!

It says:-
You will need metal brackets to acheive the necessary correction in the shortest possible time. approx 1 year. We may need to combine the fixed appliance with a removable appliance to acheive the desired result in the least possible time. Once we have acheived alignment of the front teeth you will have the option of having veneers fitted on your front teeth to achieve a beautiful smile. The braces will need to be adjusted every 6-8 weeks and once they are removed you will need to wear retainers to avoid any relapse of the teeth.

So there we have it...the cost is £2,000 and they want £800 upfront (oh dear credit card here we come!!) So, I've decided to go ahead and book the appointment to get things started in the new year..... :D

Congrats on getting your treatment plan, sounds good!

It's a deal by the way regarding the photos, I will get mine up next week and will look forward to seeing yours :D

Good to hear that you can pay in installments, lightens the load a little doesn't it?

Re: the expander. It's because my upper jaw is too narrow (called a crossbite) and doesn't match my lower jaw. For my bite to be correct after the surgery and to match my lower jaw the upper jaw has to be widened. My ortho is using a quad helix expander first which will only work at the dental level and basically tips the teeth out a little. If this doesn't widen my palate enough I wil have to have it done surgically which involves the surgeon splitting the maxillae (the paired upper jaw bones) in order to allow expansion of the jaw at the skeletal level. This would still require an expander but this would actually widen my upper jaw skeletally rather than only tipping teeth. They are hoping to succeed with the quad helix as otherwise I will have a lot of surgery to go through!

Hope that was clear!
