Hello. My name's Laura, I just turned 26 and I got my braces 4 days after my birthday, on 2/22/06. So far I've only gotten the top ones and will be fitted for an expander in a couple of weeks. I was told I will be wearing it for about 8 months. I'm not sure which kind I'll be given because I've seen two, but I'm pretty worried that I'm going to have a really bad lisp. I've noticed that I talk a little bit different with the braces on now, and I'm afraid it's going to get that much worse with the expander.

Anyway, no major problems just yet except that the brackets bug me a little. Nothing a little wax can't fix. Plus, I haven't really been able to bite down on anything using my front teeth since I got them. Pain pain pain! Everyone's telling me "just wait until they tighten them". GRRRRRREEEEEEEEEAT.

Also, I've been told I look way younger than I already did. Even the dental assistant who put my actual braces on thought I was a teenager.

So that's me...I'm glad I found this site. It's good to know that I'm not the only 26 year old who has to go through this.

Hey Laura! Welcome to the club

I've developed an "under construction" lisp which rarely annoys me. Just think, you'll have a winning smile by the end of it. Good luck with your progress!

Hi Laura

As like you i`ve only just found this site (i think all Denist should advertise this site)

I`ve not long had Braces fitted top & bottom plus a Quad Helix Expander and elastics all at the same time (nearly 2 hours in the chair) and for the first 2/3 days talking was strange to say the least but you soon adapt to it there are a few words i still can`t say but there is always ways round it.I did have a lisp to start off with but it seems to of faded away now?

I have this strange feeling now that i`ve adapted to them and they don`t feel like there pulling any more i want them tightened !! so i no they are doing something

I`ve been told also that the tightening hurts but then it cant be wore than the first three or four day? can it!
